Has anyone else lost motivation for riding lately?

Over the last few weeks I haven't been riding nearly enough - before Christmas I was riding at least four days a week, usually five or six, but this week I've only ridden once.

Poor Scooby must be feeling terribly negelcted... I think I've lost motivation because of the freezing, drizzly weather, as well as taking on loads more hours at work so I barely have time to ride and when I do, I'm too tired. How do people do it?

I'm not worried, I know that I will be working him properly again soon when it gets a bit warmer and I'm really looking forward to it, but I feel a bit bad for being such a fairweather rider at the moment! It wasn't that long ago I'd ride in the pouring rain and hail, and enjoy it... I didn't know I would become such a wuss! I'm fairly sure it's also got something to do with the fact that I don't like his saddle - I don't think it fits him properly now he's lost weight, even though I've changed the gullet and much more experienced people than me (my RI, YM etc) have assured me that it's fine... I'm just a bit paranoid about hurting him. I'd love to be able to get a proper saddle fitter in and buy Scooby a nice new saddle, but I can't afford it.

Anyway, long pointless ramble/whinge is over now. Go about your days.

I have. Found out that my horse has a heart condition three months ago and although my vet says its OK to ride him, I am wondering if I should. I need something to aim for, and as my horse can no longer compete or hunt, there is nothing.

I want another horse!

Well my horse was diagnosed with ringbone back in the autumn and my other one is a companion...so I havent ridden since then (except for once when I went to try a horse to buy, which reared spun, did it again and I fell off and broke my hand).

I told myself I would wait til the spring before looking for another...and now I find I'm not really missing riding

and do I really want another one to muck out? I just dont know, I think its the longest I have ever been without riding. Maybe when it warms up we will all get a second wind

Yes I have. Since the snow arrived I've hardly ridden at all, ridden my gelding once a week and sat on my mare once for about 10 mins! I decided last night I was going to ride them both today and then today decided I didn't want to!

I have so many plans to really make an effort to get on with schooling my mare but when it comes to the crunch I have no motivation. I hack my gelding out with a friend on her horse to keep her company but that's about it at the moment!

I don't feel guilty though as my horses get plenty of turnout, have their horsey friends and still have me as their slave. They can have an extra good groom and a massage tonight which I'm certain they will prefer

I think there is a lot of it about. I like winter riding but not in a biting north-easterly. We haven't had your snow but we have had all the extra work associated with frozen taps and water containers.

I have 11 to muck out and was on my own for two weeks so turn-out was taking an hour. When I look at last year's photo-library February was cold but March was warm and sunny and after that the weather was great.

well i think ill join this club with the recent weather and my horse having a few stifle issues i also havent ridden much this yr. I have figured the best thing is de stress and just ride of a weekend when you have time and motivation to enjoy it! The summer will be here soon and we can all get out and enjoy the light nights. Afterall unless your out competing then i know my lazy horse would much rather be snuggled in her warm stable thean out in the wind rain and ice to say i have ridden!!

Yes, but only because the only riding horse I have is not ridable at the moment - she had a stifle injury last spring so I took the vet's advice, gave her 18 months off and put her in foal. I may not get to ride until Christmas 2010 and have pretty much lost the will to do so anyway

We are all in need of some warm sunny days. I have started to do a bit more with my horses recently but only because I have been keeping them in due to the crap weather!

I think that once we all feel that spring is in the air and the evenings are much lighter, people's motivation will pick up.

Yes I have lost motivation and confidence and have barely ridden for months, alot of it is down to my girls bad foot and me not being able to ride her much.
I did have my first ride in weeks and weeks today, it was only 20mins but was a solo hack which went well, Seren found the stony ground very hard but on good ground she was absolutely fine. Am gonna try another little ride tomorrow on good ground and hope that my motivation continues after today and that she is able to carry on with her foot fingers crossed.

It's not just me then! Mine had a suspensory problem at the end of October and I've had to do so much walking on the roads, then the weather stalled us and then as the walking went up, her tolerance of all things became nil!! Vet came last week and said she was 0.5/10 lame still, she feels very good to me - nightmare!! Roll on spring!!

I haven't ridden much this year either, I just don't enjoy being freezing cold and this ongoing cold weather is starting to get me down.
Roll on spring when you don't have to scrape off the mud and swap your woolly hat for a cold helmet. It also hurts getting off, landing on stiff cold feet, or is that just me getting old!!
I do feel guilty though although I am sure horses don't mind at all.

I nearly put a similar post to yours on last week. Never been so demotivated. I really think it's the weather being so awful for so long. It's not like you can bring them in, quick brush, tack up and off you go. It's like getting a baby hippo clean. By the time the horse is clean, you are filthy and it's usually started to rain again. The list is endless for reasons not to ride at the minute. I am sure it just seems like a never ending winter to us all at the minute. Chins up everyone. The birds have been singing for the last few weeks and spring is just around the corner. When the fields have got big cracks in and we can't have a massive whizz because the ground is too hard, we will have forgotten all about the winter.

my motivation to want to ride has increased, but thats probaly becusae i know i cant, so happy though am off to look at a horse tomorrow XD
looking forward to it

Had done but went out twice today - my sister and iI went for a long hack and good gallop along a bridlepath that runs along side some gallops. We then took my older pony out and the 26yo retired TB out for a toddle. 26yo hasn't been hacked out for about a year and proceeded to jog the minute his feet touched a track - reminded us of why we don't take him out that often! He got most excited when we let some other horses go past us!

Makes me feel happy for them to be honest and also I remind myself spring is not too far away!!!

Same here! Should be more motivated as big lad is ready to be brought back into work but has to start with 6 weeks of walking on roads.............ice, snow, fog and freezing temperatures has for some strange reason made me delay

Don't mind working in the school during winter as only 30 secs away from stable in case of downpours etc!

It has been such a miserable couple of months weatherwise hasn't it, no wonder we all feel so demotivated.
