I am trying to work out what the future holds for little Zoom pony and the best option is that she will go to France with my mum when she moves at the end of the year.

I got a quote of about £400 for Monty from a transporter but he sadly didn't last long enough to make the trip :(

My good friend has a nice lorry and has offered to take Zoom to Normandy if she goes......it will cost about £120 in diesel but I was wondering how much the ferry was. I have looked online but it is confusing!! It is very kind of her to offer but I need to work out if it is cheaper than the transporter quote.

Has anyone taken a horse over there, I think it is done on length of vehicle. Any experiences of taking your own horse across the channel??

Thanks xx

How long will the journey be?

It may be that a transporter is the only way to do - as you may have to take in an overnight stop, which may be difficult to arrange.

Why can't she stay in the UK with you?

It is only 35 miles the other side of the channel. Including the ferry it is about 6-7 hours in a car so slighty more in a horsebox. We have somewhere we can stable overnight near Portsmouth so that wouldn't be a problem.

I am going to vet school in September which is great......but I really can't afford to keep Zoom. I was planning to live with the parents and keep Zoom where she is and carry on with the normal routine. Unfortunately, my father was seriously ill last year and, being self-employed, they have lost all their savings so are selling the house :( This leaves me in the doo-doo financially. The move to France has been forced as they can't live in London anymore.

I have had an offer from a friend to keep her where she is but she already has two horses of her own and I don't think it is fair for Zoom to be left in a field and just checked over. I would only be able to get there on weekends as I will be living with my sister on the other side of London. The only option is to put her on loan which is heartbreaking :( However, my parents neighbours in France have two horses and are very experienced. They have 25 acres and rent more. Their 15 year old Grandaughter who lives with them goes to pony club but is currently horseless. When mum told them about Zoomy the grandaughter was more than a little keen :D

If she goes over there she will be looked after by my mum on a daily basis under the watchful eye of her neighbour. They don't work so Zoom with have amazing care. The granddaughter will do pony club on her and I'll be there in the holidays from uni and be able to ride her.

I think it could work out really well for us all.......although I really don't want to be so far away from her, I think this will be the best option.

Sorry - that was SOOOO long!

It's awful that Zoom may have to be so far away from you, but it won't be forever and it sounds like she'll have a great time anyway. And think of the holidays you can have staying at your parents and riding in the beautiful french countryside :).

I'm not a huge amount of use, but I had a pony brought over from Germany. They drove from Germany to Calais. Ferried across to England and then drove her up to Yorkshire. It took about 16 hours. I don't know the exact costs, I'm afraid, but I paid £400 for her, which basically covered the ferry and diesel. The actual pony was free!!:D

Hello

My friend did she had her own lorry and I "think" it cost her about £400 for the two this was about 4 years ago...I shipped 2 ponies over it cost £450 used LOC transport who were FAB!! so really its not much to get a transport company :)

I've used LOC before for holidays and stuff and I thought they were fantastic. Cost-wise it sounds like there isn't really that much difference.

If that is the case, I think using a transporter may be a better idea.........or you could just keep Zoom, pay for all her expenses, exercise her etc and I'll just turn up and take her to sponsored rides etc??? :D

No idea about the transporting but thought I would say it sounds like it will be great for Zoomy to go to France :D :D
