has had a horrible night down the yard due to a freak accident

How absolutely tragic.
That poor, poor boy, and his poor, beloved horse. I hope it didn't suffer too long :(

I must admit, I've rugged mine and a fellow livery's horses this afternoon, for the first time since Spring. One of the things I checked was that the surcingles were nice and snug. I'm quite paraniod about it.

Im very paranoid about them too, some of the horses rugs have elasticated ones which i think are very nifty.
As i left the yard quite a few livery's had the scissors out lopping them off and attaching fillet strings

When it comes to belly straps; I put my hand flat between the strap and the belly and turn my hand sideways - if my index finger is against the belly, the strap should be snug (but not straining) against my little finger - then I know it's ok to allow the horse to lie down without being cut in two, but under ordinary circumstances, not to allow a hind to easily get caught.

Having said that, as I posted above, sometimes accidents happen however careful we are :(

Oh that's so awful. Know how he feels after losing out boy very suddenly in June. What a shame for the poor lad and poor horse. RIP xx

Absolutely awful! Poor horse and poor kid.

Some horses have a talent for getting into trouble. F managed to get his hind caught on the belly straps almost three times in a row, the third time damaging his tendon. I can accept that maybe the first time the straps were too loose, but the second and third times they were practically cutting him in half! I have now bought some safety gadgets but haven't had a chance to use them yet.

yep, some horses realy do like trouble! im not sure how the straps were on the rug, be it they were tight or loose. but either way its a freak accident and terrible all the same

Poor lad ((((HUGS)))) for the loss of his horse

I've started cutting off the belly straps on covers - despite the rubber rings on the catches I constantly found horses roaming the paddock with a belly strap hanging. The rugss seem to stay put and I no longer have to worry about them.

Poor kid and poor horse awfull thing to happen. Was it leg straps or belly cross surcingles he got caught in?

So, so sorry to read this. I lost my boy a month ago to a broken leg and the pain is still pretty raw.

My heart goes out to the owner and to you too. It's obviously brought back your own sad memories.

I use the same method.

The scary thing is that I have often needed to shorten X surcingles because they wont go short enough. Even my tubby grey is too slim for her Amigo and the rug is the correct size.

I'm so very sorry that this horrible accident happened.

I will not use leg straps for this reason. My horse had a similar accident a few years ago and I honestly thought she had broken her leg. Luckily the leg straps were elasticated and she got herself free, unharmed!!

My heart goes out to the poor boy and I just thank god he wasn't the one to find him/her. RIP horsey xx
