Has one or two horses put you off an entire breed?

I'd say I'm height-ist rather than breed-ist! My little chap is 14.2, ArabxWelsh, and I've had him for 17 years, loved his Arab sire who belonged to a friend, but have also met Arab's who are nutters. Love Welshies, but also have known good and bad. My friend also had 2 Shetlands, one was pretty evil, but the other is the sweetest pony, more like a dog, and is now on loan to a family who dote on him.
I love the 'look' of other horses, but have no desire to own or ride any of 'em, anything over 15h looks way to scary! :D

Don't mean to offend anyone now, and I know im not talking about a breed but I have never met a black horse that isn't evil lol!
I owned a black mare a few years back and she was the devil in disguise i swear it. And we have had quite a few pass through our yard over the years and not one of them had a nice temperament!
Not saying all are the same, just the ones i've met!

No offence taken. You're not alone in that view. I had an instructor at a xc clinic give my horse and I a hard time because he was black. I jumped the biggest xc fences I think I've ever jumped that day just to annoy him.
My horse is quirky and can be opinionated, and I could see some people wouldn't like his temperament but he's certainly not evil. Not sure if its his colour - I think more likely his breeding - but I wouldn't have him any other way.

Cleveland bay!

Stubbon is an understatement and characteristic to the breed by all accounts although if you get a good one they are really good.

Am surprised I could not see anyone else mention them does it mean that I am the only one who was unlucky enough to have one with that stubbon streak. Used to get me eliminated at compitition by the third fence, went like a dream on a good day at home!

Love id/tb

I'm trying to buy an Arab. The only thing I don't like about them is loads of them aren't backed!

Thats because some people buy them/breed them, show them inhand and then want rid of them.

I bought one a few years ago that was shown in hand at the big shows then as he was approaching 4 he was sold (gelding by the way). Owners not interested in keeping him to be ridden.

God thats harsh, I would never treat a black horse differently or their owner for that matter. In fact black is one of my fave colours to look at, you can't beat a big black stallion. I just haven't been fortunate enough to meet one yet that hasn't either taken a chunk out of me or sent his/her back legs in my direction lol :D

When I went to the MK 3 day event with my friend our horse was stabled next to a beautiful black gelding, who absolutely adored our horse but tried to bite us if we went to fuss him!

yeah, its human nature to generalise from your own experiences. the only horse I couldn't get on with was tbxconnie, I would avoid connies now, but in reality I know it was the wrong environment for her not her breeding. I love my oldie IDx, but wanted a smaller/finer horse. loaned a very rude, bargy andi mare who had to go back, went looking for an arab but ended up with another andi mare, you would not believe these 2 were the same breed. luckily I realised that the loan one was that way because she was hand reared and didnt become prejudiced against them. so easy to extrapolate from our own tiny sample of experiences

God thats harsh! I would never treat a black horse (or any horse) or their owner differently. I absolutely love black horses to look at I think they are stunning, I just have never been fortunate enough to meet a friendly one lol!

We were at a show last year and my horse was stabled next to a gorgeous black gelding who absolutely adored my horse, screamed everytime we took him out. But when i tried to fuss him, he bit me, hard lol! :D

I'm not 100% keen on W/Bs, I've had a couple of bad experiences with them, however, then again, I nearly bought an amazing dutch warmblood who was the total opposite of the others! So now I try to go in with an open mind, and make my decision based entirely on how i got on with the horse not it's breed.;)

My first pony was a black welsh a and he was a superstar, he taught me so much and had a lovely character however there's a black mare on our yard and she is a pain in the rear end. She is very moody, bulshy, take the mick, everything I don't like in a horse!

Am liking HE was a gem and SHE is very moody bulshy ie marish but that is another topic!

I was put off tbs a while ago and also anything with tb in it! Also chestnut mares. This was all from bad experiences. So someone please tell me how i ended up with a chestnut tb mare?! Hehe

Oh dear, I have recently bought a black Welsh Section D, so rather nervous now after seeing previous posts! I must say, so far, he has been an absolute dream and has a lovely temperament. The vet who vetted him did say he had put brown on the vetting certificate instead of black as some people thought they were bad luck! I found that quite amusing.

I know you shouldn't think like that but I have been put off ID's, don't think I have ever met a nice one! (like tb X though).
Yet despite working with TB's (and been bitten, kicked etc), I like them over anything else, would never ever get another ID though! :o
Someone please enlighten me!

I'm the other way round love ID's and would never ever consider a TB or Arab. Although beauty is in the eye of the beholder.:p

I have quite a list of breeds I've been put off...

- Haflingers, every one I've met has been rude and bolshy
- Trakheners, bad tempered bordering on psychotic
- Trotters, met a few that seem to have suspect temperaments and can turn nasty out of nowhere with no warning.

I've also met a few horrible black mares so I'd try to steer clear of them too. Generally I like anything of Irish origin, either IDx, ISH or Connie X - particularly crossed with TB.

I don't particularly like irish horses but to be fair i think it tends to be their handling although i have found quite a few of them are strong and bargy, on the other hand they are quite often bold and brave. I did however look at an irish 4 year old yesterday and am having him vetted but he has dutch breeding so it's ok, he's also black but i have no issues with black horses. it's good everyone has different likes otherwise we'd all want the same horses. given a choice i'd have a westphalian over any other breed

Oh yes and one type of horse i absolutely refuse to even look at is a chestnut gelding, love chestnut mares but had 3 horrible geldings from the age of 7 to 12 and have been scarred for life ever since, recently i've met one i liked but he is now crippled i believe and several more i couldn't stand so i'll be sticking to my dislike i think

.

Mine's lovely - neurotic rather tha psychotic tho' ;) But I have to admit to having been converted rather than loving them at first sight as they're not the easiest.

Warmbloods - are such a wide category that it's difficult to identify a 'type' per se, but I'd avoid KWPNs after one too many issues with them. Others I've known and ridden have been fine.

Welsh Ds, Arabs and TBs I love, and IDs are very sweet but take a while 'to get it' in my experience.

Beside the size issue for me I wouldn't have a Welsh A.

I own an absoloutely stunning black warmblood gelding and he couldn't have a nicer character. He's sooo friendly, never seen him even put his ears back, so loving and sweet!! And in my personal opinion I think black horses are the most stunning colour!

I don't mean to offend anyone now but I don't like cobs. I don't like them to look at and don't like them to ride, they feel and look like tanks! Not keen on anything chunky and hairy mind you. I like lightweight breeds that are lively and forward going like TBs and TBxs, Arabs, some Warmbloods, some ISH's etc. Obviously each horse varies so much despite which breed they are though!

Personally i've never had great experiences with Cleveland Bays, every one i've worked with has been piggy and stubborn.

I would always have ID x TB as a first choice....probably the old hunt/ event background that drilled that in to me.

Not really, but I would think twice about going to view a trakhener, from my experience most of the ones I have met have been opinionated and quirky and although beautiful, I just wouldn't want the hassle!

Shi.........I mean Shetlands, bad tempered, spoilt and bolshy little gits imho.

Also don't like cremello ponys, not a breed I know, but every cremello pony I came across as a child was a nasty evil thing

TB & Arabs all the way! I used to work on an arab stud yard and they are so lovely! Some nut cases but if brought up correctly you can do anything with them and TB's as I have one and wouldnt really like to have anything else! So well mannered! Quirky, mard and Loving! A few words to describe him!

In one of my other posts I said that I think black horses are stunning to look at, one of my faves in fact. I just haven't met a nice tempered one yet!! :)

I wouldn't choose a TB but that's more of a physical thing as I don't like a horse that is too skinny, I don't like feeling like I'm perched on top of a horse so prefer wider ones. A TB crossed with something more chunky is fine as behaviour isn't what puts me off.

I adore Sec Ds having had a black one who was slightly bonkers and very bolshy to handle, but safe as houses, affectionate and very talented and never sick or sorry. I had him 14 years and he was never lame and his one and only bout of colic was when he was 27. Sadly it killed him.

I now have an IDx something (connie/irish cob we suspect!) who is lovely, affectionate and amazing in traffic but he can be fizzy and very strong. He's not blessed with talent either, love him. He can get quite upset if you ask him to do something he doesn't understand.

I also share an (IDxTB)x(TBxSecD) who is very talented and genuine, but also very lazy so he does everything you ask of him but only ever just gives it enough energy This makes him pretty safe but a bit boring, especially as he's not very affectionate and lacks a bit of personality. He never has a strop about anything and his only sticking point is he's slightly dodgy with large vehicles.

Over the last few years I've also ridden an IDxTB mare who was an evil witch and would buck you off as soon as look at you and an IDxTB we refer to as Mr Perfect. He does everything brilliantly is forward going without being strong, has impeccable manners and has enough of a personality and the odd quirk (can get a tiny bit stroppy if he's doing something he doesn't like) that he isn't boring.

The ID is the common theme here but they're all so different I really don't think you can generalise. The fizziest one is the one lacking any TB and the laziest one is the one with the most TB AND some Sec D in him! The grumpy one is the mare but that's a different argument altogether:p.

Black and a section D - at least one of you has a sense of humour!

Only kidding! I love black horses and I love section Ds - he sounds lovely.
