I had a thought the other day. When do other people were their hats and body protectors? every ride, just for jumping, all the time?
I always wear my hat when riding no matter what, i wear my HS1 for hacking, xc or when there is a greater chance of me falling off! as it has a higher safety standard than my harry hall. As for body protectors i never wore one before, even for xc  but uppon moving to a new yard with gallops and a xc course i decided it is best to invest in one, a lovely new racesafe :D
I havent been on the course/jumped yet and havent worn it but whilst hacking out yesterday i thought 'hmm, should i be wearing my bp now?' new roads, traffic i didnt know and sights the horse hadnt seen before and it didnt occur to me to put a bp on!
So guys when do you wear your hats and bp's? and for what activities?

i wear a hat for everything, even if its just flatwork in the school, but i hate BP's so only wear one when i have too i.e xc competition, i never train with one..... yes i know i should but i just dont like them!!! and never wear it at home for anything! :)

Always wear a hat for riding and for handling some horses on the ground. I only got a bp a few years ago but since then I have worn it every time I ride. Just feel I have then taken as many sensible precautions I can take before I ride.

i have never worn a hat on the ground tbh, not even when working with unhandled horses or youngsters! im young and the national health is free!

I always wear my hat (Champion Ventair skull cap) when riding or lunging, and also if I'm leading a difficult horse. Always have gloves on to lead/ride/lunge too as there's nothing worse than rope-burned hands! I wear my body protector (Racesafe) for XC or if I'm riding a naughty horse!

Hat for riding and lungeing, together with boots and gloves. Hat and bp for all riding, any type, anywhere! Horse: tall, young green spookmonster Arab! Me - aged crone who cant afford to be off work cos he's an expensive little darling!

Always wear a hat for riding, sometimes on the ground too esp if they're playing silly buggers! I don't own a BP but will be investing v soon, I have got away without any injurys and I think I'm pushing my luck now!

Hat and BP every time I ride. My mare has been known to be unpredictable with nappy and rearing tendencies. Although she is much better than she was I'm not prepared to take the risk - particularly out hacking. I have a Racesafe BP which is so comfy I'm not actually aware that I'm wearing it.

I always wear a hat when riding as better safe than sorry and all that :D

As for BP, I own a Point Two Airjacket and I used to only wear it when road hacking however my youngster is currently going through a stroppy baby phase so I have taken to wearing it when going off road hacking round our farm ride too. I still don't use one when in an arena though :D

Hat = whenever I sit on a horse but very very rarely for lunging or anything like that.

BP = Never, I don't own one. But If I ever went XC I'd invest in one. Fast + solid jumps = inevitable disaster.

Hat all..well most of the time ;) i sometimes forget to put one on when i have a cheeky sit on one of the boys :D but i always wear it jumping/hacking and handling my baby Lipizzaner as he can be a handfull ;P etc

I always wear my racesafe bodyprotector while doing xc and sitting on youngsters or difficult horses but it wasnt until a few weeks ago when i was popping some fences at home that my silly horse fell on me - it was his own fault - he was having a tantrum so he did a beautiful side pass then threw his head in the air and when to go forwards with his legs still crossed and he just fell over... silly boy

Luckily i wasnt hurt just a couple of bruises but i now wear my body protector for jumping!!

Always wear a hat for riding, and when my horse was injured and being walked in hand i would always wear one then too.

Bp I wear for xc and for jumping most of the time. I confess to not wearing it in jumping clinics this summer with my baby cob as it's been so warm and we're only doing 2ft max at the mo.

I also wear it when hacking out my spooky pony on his own as I've had a few big ejects from him and landed flat on my back.

Has your baby thrown himself onto his knees yet in a tantrum? ;P

I wear my hat all the time when i'm riding, i wouldn't risk riding without one. I used to wear my BP every time I rode my mare but now it's only occasionally because the damned thing is so uncomfy! I'm going to invest in a new, comfier one soon as I know I need the protection because usually when I fall off, I injure some part of me badly :o:p

I always wear a hat for riding, lunging and loading (then I keep it on in the car so I can't forget it :D), plus any time I'm doing any handling or groundwork where it has even a vague chance of getting risky. I'll always wear gloves whenever I wear a hat.

Don't own a body protector, but would/should wear one for jumping - I need to save some pennies and buy a racesafe.

Hat = All the time when I am on a horse, sometimes also for clipping, leading in hand or lunging depending on the horse.

BP = Up until recently I very rarely wore one, always for XC and more recently when ever I am working a horse that has a bit of a reputation (despite not having got him past walk yet)!.

I always wear my hat for lunging or groundwork and my hat and air vest every time I ride. I had a near fatal fall 2 years ago and my husband and father refused to let me ride if I didn't wear my air vest. I also feel it gives me more confidence. The only time I rode without it was when I fell off during a jumping lesson and it went off, I replaced it with my BP and successfully jumped the jump before stopping lol :)

hat always when riding and have recentle taken to wearing one to clip ponies legs but not for general clipping :S

always used to wear one as a youngster but now only wear one for x-country training and x-country. otherwise dont wear one - i got a racesafe when i was 13 which i dont think was ever fitted properly as always ended up round my ears as hit the back of the saddle but whenever i took it back to tree house at badminton/olympia (every year i used to walk around with it - must have looked as if i was hoping to get a ride ons omething :L) they always said it was fine - clearly not! i also have a bog standard areowear one which is the one i tend to wear now as although the racesafe now fits length wise despite gaining weight since i was 13 its far too big for me now even when done up on the tightest. i also wore one when backing the pony but dont wear it at home any more they're just so god damn un comfy! i would love a hit/point 2 jacket to hack in or jump at home in but i would ALWAYS forget to unclip it when i got off and spend a fortune in air canisters!

I always ride in a hat and I'd always lunge or free school with one on. I liked to wear one to catch my horse as a youngster thought it was fun to gallop and ram himself into Bs bum..
I have recently bought myself a body protector as I am hacking out on my own and feel a little more secure in it :)

Wear my hat for riding, lunging etc and my body protector every time i ride. I've witnessed someone fall off and break their back from a fairly innocent looking fall so i won't take the risk of riding without it.

Has your baby thrown himself onto his knees yet in a tantrum? ;P

Haha not on purpose! Although he does have terrible balance and has managed to fall on his face a fair few times, mostly whilst having a tantrum!
You'd think that he'd learn!

wear both everytime! I'd rather be a bit too hot/uncomfy when I'm riding for an hour than being wheelchair bound for the rest of my life with no more riding, I honestly wouldn't be able to forgive myself!

I always wear a hat but I also always wear a body protector. That was the deal when my OH allowed me to take up riding. ;)

These days I do have a nice Airowear Outlyne BP, which fits very snugly and doesn't rub. Body protectors are hot though - I always need a change of shirt after riding.

Always wear my hat and up until I got a dressage saddle with a high cantle used to wear my bp every time. Will still wear my bp for hacking jumping etc and use my other saddle
