How many hats do you have?

I don't mean caps or waxed hats etc, but riding hats - ones that are under 3 to 4 years old and that are also at least RC comp legal?

Asking the question as friend has just picked up another, now having a choice of 4, one for hacking and 3 for competing. (Am not envious, just curious)

I have my 2yr old CO pro 2 skull which is used for just about everything and also a velvet for occasional shows or stressage.

One two year old Co 4star and an old CO junior jockey skull that still fits that I keep in the car because of the one time the OH came across a loose hunt horse on the back lane.

Three.

Skulk cap for hacking (with visible bright pink cover), one the same size/type in the lorry (but more muted blue) and also a peaked hat for dressage/sj competitions where there is a camera LOL.

I do also have a shed load of older ones! Can't seem to throw the old friends away.

I have a skull cap and a gatehouse fixed peak with another fixed peak on the way but my gatehouse is nearly 3. I also have an old velvet hat which I never use anymore and should get ride of

Just the one, by those criteria.

Charles Owen Pro II Plus skull bought on 21 May 2019. I also have the Decathlon with a peak, but it must date from 2013.

Oh, and an old, old velvet hat that OH found for me at a junk shop, as a curio.

I’ve got 2 that tick all the boxes - one fixed peak Samshield that I wear for doing everything and one CO 4 star skull cap that I never wear because it’s too blooming small*.

I’ve also got another 4 in the spare room but they’re all old, no longer fit (see below point about COs packing out!), or have been damaged in falls.

* I bought a size down expecting it to pack out massively like every other CO I've had. It did not.

I have 2 Charles Owen skull caps, both the same but one is 1 year old and the other 2 years older. This is so that if one is damaged it can be discarded, and there is still a working hat here until I can get another.

I wear them for everything, have quite a collection of hat silks which can be changed depending upon activity or whim.

I have 4. I upgraded my skull cap and fancy dressage hat last year and I bought my velvet about 5 yrs ago especially for showing. So I have A Charles Owen Jockey skull cap. A Charles Owen Wellington velvet cap for showing. A posh Uvex Suxxeed for dressage and I recently bought a Uvex Exxential because it’s been so hot and it has better ventilation.

3. My velvet show hat, a fixed peak hat and my skull cap.

I used to wear the fixed peak all the time then went to a xc lesson where I required a skull cap. Haven’t worn the fixed peak hat since!

3. An Ayr8 that's kept in horsebox for wearing at shows, that's all its used for.
CO skull that's used everyday, plus another the same that is older but still up to date and is used for quadrille.

Four here too, not sure how that happened...

My trusty Gatehouse HS1 which still fits, but is a proper 'mushroom' unflattering hat. A more flattering Charles Owen skull cap for best.

Also two ventilated non skulls for hot weather, a Gatehouse Conquest 11 and my latest purchase, a Uvex Exxential MIPs hat.

Just the one, uvex exxential for everything. But then I don’t compete and I don’t really do xc so I wouldn’t have a need for any others.

Out of interest, what does everyone do with their old/damaged/out of date hats? Apart from hoard them in the spare room or tack room!

Putting them in the black bin seems wrong, but I’m not sure that any of part them can be recycled.

I’ve seen them used as hanging baskets and birds nests if you wanted an alternative use for them

I have an RXC1 skull cap (which was my everyday hat before I lost the liner), an Uvex Exxentials which I bought as an everyday hat for while it was so hot, and a navy velvet Gatehouse Jeunesse for competing.

The Uvex drives me up the wall because it's so smooth that none of my hi-viz stays put, and neither does my camera harness.

Oh, yes, I have a hat cover to match each saddlecloth, plus the multiple hi-viz hacking ones, plus the Halloween, Christmas, etc.!

I have the best of the worst under the passenger seat in horsebox, others are shoved sideways in the Holly hedge behind stables, 5 in total, 3 were in use as nests this year.

I used to have a system going whereby I purchased a new hat every year and used it for doing RDA assessing and at home, the second year it was used at RDA in carriage driving sessions and then it got passed onto the group for another year as a hat for riders/drivers.

Then covid hit, I stopped doing RDA and appear to have three hats in the cupboard, one unworn.

4!
Uvex LED for hacking which replaced the Caldene which is now the groundwork/clipping safety hat. A blue velvet hat which I bought dirt cheap in a clearance sale which has never been used, and recently picked up a jockey skull for an upcoming clinic requiring no fixed peak.
