Firstly I have no objections about clipping I often clip (When needed) and I am not targeting everyone just wanted to have a rant and hear your thoughts.

We have a pony on the yard which is kept in a field on it's own next to my mare and her field buddy, I have had to put electric fencing up to stop them touching as I am sure my mare would try to kill this poor little thing if she thought it was showing any interest in her field mate.

Anyway getting to the point shortly, this little pony is kept in the field for I presume the womans daughter to come and ride it as and when they can be bothered. Quite often we don't see anyone attending to it on a regular basis, (Once it was brought in and no one came to see it for a few days so the girls on the yard topped water up etc and checked it was ok until someone bothered to turn it back out).

Now I have never seen this little thing get ridden only with the kid sat on it while mum walks it to the yard in a head collar, that was about 2 months ago and not seen anyone on it since (although I could be wrong)

This little pony is very fine, not skinny but not plump either, yesterday to my horror mum dragged it in had the whole thing clipped, and turned it back out rugless. Each morning I turn my mare and her field buddy out its stood in one spot with its head hung low and looks really fed up.. The poor thing must be FREEZING..

Why do people feel it is a need to clip when quite clearly this pony is doing nothing but standing in a field. Surely it would be better to leave it woolly for winter.

Now please correct me if I am wrong...

A word to the YO maybe....? If it were my yard, I'd be sorting the woman out full-stop...

I'm not one for interfering, but she's not being particularly fair on the pony, turning the poor devil out without a rug on now she's taken all his fur away....

Speak to the yo, obviously for them to take immediate and urgent action. Failing that phone the owners, failing that phone the WHW.

Let us know how you get on.

I dont think this is so much about the clipping but general care or lack of it. Where is the YO in this they should set some standards,if this was on my yard I would tell the owners they either take care of the pony properly ,put it on livery or find somewhere else to go.
As for clipping in general I think you should take off only what is required for the horse to be able to work comfortably, many people are now doing full clips purely for their own convenience, then having to over rug to keep the horse warm.

unfortunatley these days some people see clipping as a fashion statement we have 2 at my yard who do nothing and are clipped. "oh but dont they look pretty!" owners comments not mine. Totally agree with above posts that poor pony needs a rug now...

Just so you all know, YO only comes down once a week. I have emailed him about the pony and fairly but bluntly said that something should be done. If nothing happens I will take the next step.

Poor little thing was stood at the gate watching mine come in so snuck a few carrots to it when driving back up. Feel like I should be strapping hot water bottles to her ears though.

Cheers guys

Presume the owners are novices and don't know any better maybe...hopefully? in which case can you not contact them and give them some 'friendly' advice, meantime stick a rug on so the poor mite doesn't catch its death.

Agree YO needs to sort them out though with regards to how there looking after the pony or not as it seems, if the YO is not keeping an eye on things then their as much to blame IMO.

I clip mine out fully and rug and feed accordingly so have no problem with that - exception being my old mare who has a high bib only where she sweats. Having known a horse die of prnemonia I take the "keeping horses warm" very seriously

Get involved! We had the SE kind of thing with a young Friesean gelding a few years back. I got him a rug in the end and had a very stern word with the owner when she finally showed up. So stern in fact she complained to the yo about me and said she felt threatened... She was bloody right, it took me every bit of self control not to punsh her!

My girl is clipped but she is worked and needed it! as for this pony turning out without a rug is bad as its been chilly! let the YO know as its not fair on the pony

Presume the owners are novices and don't know any better maybe...hopefully?

Maybe they are novice and don't know any better, but they'd also have to be pretty damn stupid to not realise that clipping hair off + standing outside naked = bloody freezing. (Not getting at you Kenzo, just I mean that they must be stupid, as well as novice!)

Poor thing.
Don't know where you are OP but around here its only 3-6 degrees at night!
Mine is only out in a MW but when she is clipped out she will be in her heavy full neck and other rugs when needed...
I am sorry to say this but I would be talking to YO and the owners of the pony and would probibily rug it. Its things like this that really get me upset and angry! :(

Unfortually I have to agree many things are becoming a fashion statement Inc clipping
, but also it comes when people are being absolutely lazy and not wanting the work that comes with a thick coat when reaching spring / summer time when moulting .

Some people are just daft!!

the mind boggles doesn't it.

i hope you manage to figure out a solution for the pony's sake

well done for caring!

Rug it yourself, tell the YO he/she has a duty of care to the horse and then ring WHW if not rectified pretty sharpish.

As for clipping for fashion - who cares? So long as its rugged appropriately I don't think the animal cares either. Bigger fish to fry people..

I really don't care why people clip but they shoudl certainly rug and feed accordingly.

I would have put a rug on it myself if it happened at my yard.

A few years ago a novice owner fully clipped her native mare, turned her out every day in the freezing cold with a l/w rug on and no hay - there was not a scrap of grass in the field. The poor thing was charging the fence when I was feeding mine. I told the girl and she agreed for me to give it hay from her bales when I did mine. Idiot.Yes the pony wasn;t thin (yet) but it was freezing and hungry.

Bumping again....

Has anything been sorted out for this poor pony OP?

I realise you have best intentions but an e;mail and some carrots won't really be helping the pony!

Any news?
