what size bale and how many horses/ feeding rates are you using?
my lot were on large smallbales (tightly packed homemade) but they are running short so ive bought some in.
small bales £4 each. using about 1/2 bale each per day plus haylage medium square bales 28 each (3 string 4fters) which only two horses are getting adlib during the daytime- using about 1 slice per day for them.
however i prefer the really big bales so im considering getting some heston hay bales at 50 each...anyone else use them?

Using small bales bought at v expensive £4.50 which we would never normally pay and we only got 20, but that's cos we ran out recently and so couldn't haggle. Also for the sheep using big round bales at £30, horse quality but we can only store enough of those for the sheep. Normally make our own but weather and baler problems last summer meant we didn't make enough. Also feed oat straw at £2 a bale. All prices collected apart from the round bales which are delivered. there is cheaper small bale hay around but in the snow we can't get over to places further away. The sheep are in lamb so have to have decent stuff in the snow.

I am in Nottingham. Using small bales at £4 each as that's all YO can get currently. Before the snow, one bale was lasting 3 days as I am also feed oat straw at £1.50 a small bale.

With the snow however i'm getting through 1 bale of hay a day, so roll on spring!

Well my supplier that said we were good til May, wigged out and said no more yesterday. Thanks! Anyway scrambled and found the best hay we've had all year. It's €3 a bale. So we bought all he had. 220 bales. We can pick up a load at a time. Before that using big squares @€35. That was lasting 6 days with 7. But it's mixed with haylage. That's €35 a bale and lasts 5 days. No haylage goes to the field. And all horses have adlib more or less. By that I mean they have plenty and there are some horses that leave a bit that goes out to the field. It also means fatties can't just down a small square because they think they need it. Not sure how quickly we will go through the small squares. There is very good weight to a flake. More than an average bale. So that's promising. We shall have to see. Nearly done with our haylage from the one supplier but our new hay guy has a bit left so will be buying those too.

I'm just glad it all worked out because I was slightly worried yesterday!

Large bale haylage on site made by the farmer where I livery for £30.00. Thats West Berkshire. My two horses will go through one in about ten days. That's out during the day on good grazing and adlib haylage at night.

Large round bale of hay is £35 delivered. Lasts 2 weeks for 2 horses (in at night and no grass in field).

Large rectangular bales of haylage is £26 delivered. I was feeding that to only one horse over night so a bale was lasting 2-3 weeks (hes on just hay now though).

Just bought 12 5ft round bales of sweet smelling meadow hay for £120. No idea why it's so cheap, it's the best hay I've had in years. There is an abundance of hay around here though, so think farmers are desperate to get rid of it. It is tightly packed and lasting my 2 a month or so fed ad lib during day in field and at night in stable

I went and picked up some 2.50 small bales to try today as I ran out yesterday, its very fine and a bit like tumbleweed but the horses seem to be enjoying it! Could get better quality from same guy for 4 quid, might get in a combination as don't know how well the cheap stuff will keep.

paying £5 for a small bale of hay which i use and haylage is £50 for a small square bale. rubbish quality tho

Kent -Large round bale of hay delivered - £30. Fed so he always has some left, get through it in 4 - 5 weeks depending on the weaher. But he still has plenty of grass in his field so he only gets a whelbarrow out there, which he doesn't touch...

Large, round bale of haylage 40 euros delivered, small bales 8 euro delivered. The small bales suit me more as I have only one horse and 2 goats to feed, but it works out way more expensive. Got no choice at the mo as my supplier has run out of large bales :(

NW Surrey, £5 per small bale, delivered & stacked - very very good qual and good sized bales, far better than local feed merchants who are charging upwards of £6.50 a bale.

HF is going through a bale a day at present. (okay, I fib slightly;) he's getting through a bale, less 1 wedge - TF has the 1 wedge split into 2 portions over 24 hrs)

Small bales at £4.50 and not the highest of quality either v dusty and mouldy in middle :(
medium sized bales was paying £21 that only lasted a week and again wasn't the best of stuff (horse left loads)

Our farmer provides really massive bales of haylage for £25 - but some bales were wetter than others, and although my two loved it, it made the TB a bit stressy and the native too fat. So I moved them onto hay - small bales at £4.50 per bale, good quality. I am currently going through one bale between two horses per day - sometimes a bit less, sometimes a bit more, depending on whether they are going out in the field all day or staying in. Yes the hay costs more than the haylage, but my two seem better on it.

Large square bales of hay €47.50 per bale incl. delivery. Small square bales €4 per bale free delivery. Very good quality. Not sure about haylage prices as ad lib is included in the livery price. Just had to pay for hay.

Large round hay bale is £20 pound delivered and lasts 2 horses 1pony about 6 days, depending on weather. It is lovely hay with no waste, apart from in the field.
It sounds as if I'm quite lucky.

large bale of hay.. okay quality not always brillant - £40 im using 2 a week on 3 horses... god thats depressing! also its without delivery as its already at the yard just gets dumped on my pallets :o they arent particularly heavy either... i can roll them on my own

I'm paying £25 for a large round. Lasting 3weeks with the four of our guys, quite big heavy well packed bales, I'm struggling to roll them myself and normally I don't have any issues.

Two are good doers living out and only two are in.
