Hay on yard - how would you handle this?

First of all let me say i love my yard, I keep my head down, I do my horse, I have a few good friends on the yard and I wouldnt be anywhere else but today I must admit I am really pissed off .

Some people on the yard have clearly been abusing the hay all in rule. They have been overfeeding and then wasting the hay - chucking it all out if their horse doesn't eat it (but apparently it would seem, feeding said horse the same portion the next night

)

Ed has two haynets. He finishes it all and if he doesn't he keeps it for the next day.

The actions of a few have now made the YO put a rule of one haynet per horse per night. This is simply not enough for Ed. He'd spend half the night stood round with nothing, which for me is unaaceptable.

I am annoyed that the actions of a few are threatenning (potentially) the health of my horse (cant horses get ulcers from long periods without trickle feed going through?)

The little cow in me feels like going out and getting an industrial sized net

but the pacifist in me feels like going to the yo and trying to explain why it wont/cant work.

After all you cant say a 13hh pony eats the same as a 16,2hh horse or a jack russell the same as a St Bernard etc etc and honestly, if this really does carry on i'll have to think about moving, which I really dont want to do.

Thoughts, suggestions?

It's such a shame when the selfish actions of others spoil things isn't it?

I'd be inclined to get a decent size haynet that will hold the poundage you're wanting to feed.

Now, my 16.2hh is currently only eating around 13.5lbs a night. This is given to him at 5.30pm and he is fed again at 6.00am the next morning. Sometimes there's something left - more often not. However, any more hay than this and there is stacks left over. But the little mare next door is eating 16lb's. She is significantly smaller, and not overweight. So there's no hard and fast rule.

But an 'ordinary' sized haynet should hold more than enough hay (probably) for your horse. So don't panic..........

I would probably buy a massive net, or sneak more hay in when the YO wasn't looking! But the right thing to do would be to go talk to the YO. It is awfull when people abuse rules like that, I used to be on a yard where you got unlimited free hay and straw (obviously within reason), and it was great, most people were very good and just used normal amounts. We did have one livery once who used to give her horse masses of hay that it didn't eat, then throw it away, YO got annoyed with her and told her off, prehaps your YO should do the same, it's unfair to make everyone suffer for a few people's wrongdoings.

Sorry to read that one should spoil things this way. As others have already said speak to the YO see if it can be sorted if not I have these nets bought from ebay item number 220310118424 they are wonderful and I have very large horses all over 16.3hh and they do not get through one very stuffed one! Mind do be careful as when full they are very very heavy!! Other thought what about a hay bar then you could fill it.

I know I shouldn't panic, I just hate things like this and get in a flap - annoys me that everyone cant act like adults and respect that the hay shouldnt be wasted!

It is easier to make us all suffer than to confront the people who are abusing the system, sadly.

Very annoying indeed

I would speak to the YO and if she stands by the one net rule then go and get a mahoosive one. I have large nets and I can get 5 sections in one of them if I stuff them in tight. It slows her down eating as well if they are packed in. Hope you get it sorted xx

If I were you I would buy a HUGE net.

My 16.1hh eats a huge amount of haylage compared to others the same size. Think 'inhaling' and you'll get the picture lol

She is fed anything between 6-7 at night depending on whether she is ridden or not. She can easily get through a 'standard' sized net in a couple of hours and as she isnt fed until 8 the next morning I wouldnt want her standing around for the majority of the night with nothing so her very large net is filled to capacity, so much so I use a wheelbarrow to transport it lol

The YM asked if she actually ate it all and was surprised when I answered yes. Its only very occasionally there is a handful left in the bottom.

She isnt overweight but does do a lot - s/j/dressage at weekends or hunts (sometimes both) and is ridden at least 5 days a week.

Every horse is different (just like people). She shouldnt have to go short just because others are happy to waste it.

Oh, well then I really can't see a reason for them to chuck it either

I'd have a word with the YO and maybe explain that there are few that are just throwing away perfectly fine hay and maybe it should be just those who do so that are limited

That might cause a bit of a stir...but then if they stopped chucking the hay they wouldn't be within the restricted hay problem either

Oh, I know what I mean

yep, i'd get a huge net that holds about 7 slices of hay (if you're using small bales), that should be about enough for most horses, even ones who eat a lot of hay!
it's ridiculous that other people being wasteful might mean that your horse goes without. i'd do something about it definitely.

Would speak to yard owner first.Any way YO can tell who does this?Could they then charge them extra??Yard I was on did this as it was noted who culprits were and they were charged accordingly. Our YO made everyone go onto shavings as straw was included in livery but folk were clearing out whole beds daily!!

A few weeks ago I bought a large small holed net from shires. It was a bit more money than a standard hay-net but it holds over 8kg (17lbs) of haylage which is plenty for my horse.
I think it could be your answer but I would want to talk to the YO too - it might seem a bit sneaky not to

can you chuck some on the floor, or say you have a bad back so you cant put much in each one

our 2 get through quite a bit atm and they're not as big as ted, think it would fit in one net though as ours is particularly dense this year.

What a fekkin stupid rule, like 13hh Cob is going to eat he same as a 17.5hh thorobred, go find a circus, ask for an old trapeze safety net, then make a GINORMEOUS hay net, and bollocks to the YO.

Yard Owner, anagram of Yapping Orifice.......

hmm..the only thing I would say is surely it would be easier to charge everyone for usage? Then you could have 2 haynets
someone who only wants to feed one and throw out any waste from that could do that.
I can see why they would-my horse won't eat the same hay once he's disgarded it, so why leave it in the stable???

Easier yes - fairer, no. At the end of the day if your horse leaves hay, don't put so much in the next day. Seems a really simple principle to me, then no-one has to suffer.
