Hay prices

My hay supplier has run out and I'm beginning to panic. Like a lot of native owners, I feed hay throughout the summer as they come in for a break from the grass during the day.

If anyone knows of a supplier within reasonable travelling distance of HD9, please 🙏 let me know.

Oh sorry you have to go through this, hope some turns up soon

I use hay in summer for the (potential fatties)

I'm planning (once I'm down to 2 ponies) to just use small bale Timothy haylage. I might reconsider that in winter time
Have you asked on Huddersfield Horses or similar fb pages

I'm in a similar boat, it's so frustrating having masses of grass but the horses need hay

eta and where I am the Timothy haylage has run out both Marksway and other brands, and there's no blue Marksway either

We have had issues with the Country Haylage and Mole Valley own brand, being too wet and more like silage. Only last year’s batches.

Now using wrapped hay (Yeoman) which is all we can get. This week bought a week’s worth and they’re leaving it - the grass is growing properly now. I have never been so relieved!

I think this is what I'll do too. Its pricey compared to hay, but I think it'll be better for Bo's airways.

Just bought a 2.4m 6 string Heston of meadow at £110 and I had to collect in trailer. Sounds a lot, but when small bales are still £7.50+ round here it doesn’t work out awful in the long run.

They're one and the same (Country and MVF that is), but I have MVF haylage and it has been ok moisture wise. Cost of hay definitely not coming down round here, but suppliers have been sourcing from as far as France and Ireland, so it's unlikely to. YO is still selling at top whack, too (they have not bought in - it was all made last July). They've been left with surplus after telling us they were running out - we all rushed off to buy elsewhere (I did that when they put the price up to £10.50 per bale for homegrown hay) and now there's only one livery out of 16 buying from them. Own goal there... I have enough until the next harvest of haylage, but not sure what I'll do for next year. Tempted to buy in advance, then I don't have to worry, and store it at home.

I’ve managed to secure two more 4ft rounds of 2024 hay (perfect for my three good doers and my laminitic boy) and that’s the lot then I think until we we make some but hopefully we will be taking a first cut in June. My old boy will have priority of it because he’s on an almost hay only diet, the other two I will strip graze.
