Does anyone use hay racks nowadays?

I don't, and consequently have a few just leaning against a wall in a barn. Before I turn them into large plant holders, I thought I'd ask the question.

:o

I've used hayracks when they've been a pre-existing feature of a livery stable... mostly for tying haynets too though! Then I would chuck an extra little bit in the rack if I was having one of those days where I was convinced they wouldn't have enough overnight. I wouldn't fit one by choice though.

I have a couple, they are useful for horses that like to drag their hay through their bed, or decide that once hay touches the floor it's yucky.

I suppose, if the bars were sufficiently close together (to prevent shoes catching) and it was large enough for a horse's head to fit in the top and strong enough to be stood on a bit one could be fitted low down - like those expensive hay bar things - but with better visibility for the feeding horse?

I'm actually using one at the moment because P has moved into my other stable as the hooligan is coming back tomorrow and will go back into his old stable where he has already half eaten the door (decided not to wreck another door!)
Two stables have hay bars in, but I didn't get round to getting one for the third stable and coz it's been spare since Joe was put to sleep, there has been little point.
I'm back to three now so I will get another bar, but for now, P is quite happy with the rack.

Yes I do just bought a new one today - I use the haylage ones and the ordinary ones, every stable has one but up to livery if they use them for hay. Some use them to put their horse boots in, others hang rugs on them.

Like a previous poster said I used to tie my nets with thinned out twine to the hay mangers and we used to keep our brushes and boots in the manger itself as it had a little access door at the front of the stable, so it was very handy in that respect! I recently picked up a 2nd hand hay bar for £15 as it was damaged but partner managed to fix it .Its great and does the job lovely, as AA said it can encourage undesirable muscles under the neck and its better to feed a horse on the ground anyway which a hay bar kind of does.

With the horse? No don't like that idea. Poor cat may get hurt.

My yard cat, Tiddly Piddly, sleeps in the stables with the horses, he curls up in the banks. He has 2 bespoke cat beds in the feed room, and numerous soft cuddly spots in the rug room, but no, he prefers to sleep with the horses.

This is surely the real reason that banks were invented!

I like the idea of using hay racks to grow plants in. I may dig mine out from the back of the tack room and do that :)
