He’s here…

So, he’s lovely and doing well. But he always wees in his crate, every single time he goes in. He doesn’t seem distressed, eg just now he was in there for half an hour while my son had his breakfast in the same room and I took the grown ups out.
he had a Kong, which he has cleaned and was quiet but I just let him out and there’s a wee. And he lies in it so he honks.
Suggestions? Please. The house smells!

Presumably he isn’t marking his territory Clodagh? I don’t know much about boy dogs and how they mature but it’s always been my thought, probably misguided that boys are harder to train especially when no one has started them off as puppies. Only other suggestion I have is going back to puppy training and taking him outside every time he wakes up, needs to sleep or has a meal or every half hour and teach him a command to go.

I don’t think he would be marking yet.
We treat him like a puppy, (well he is!) and do all things we would do if he was 8 weeks old. It’s like a bonus widdle. ?

Might it be worth putting a puppy pad in his crate? I don't like them in crates usually, as they appear to encourage weeing on them, but that might work in your favour in this instance. At least then it can just be removed when he leaves the crate. Hopefully after a little while no pad will mean no wee.

That’s a good idea. But what if he eats it!? Maybe newspaper, I’m sure you can eat that with no harm.
It might help the washing machine ?

What are you using to clean the crate. I'd take it outside, spray dilute BIO laundry liquid all over the crate (so the enzymes in the washing liquid break down any lasting scent marker of the urine) then hose it all off. Wash all bedding in BIO detergent as well, it must be BIO as the enzymes break down any lingering traces.

Then start all over again. Keep some bio detergent diliuted in the spray bottle to clean up any accidents. It could just be that he's inadvertantly learned that the crate is a toilet and you'll have to teach him otherwise. I wouldn't use pads or newspaper as that's just confirming to him that the crate is a toilet.

Before you had him how was he kept? Has he learnt that beds are for peeing in? You'll have to ondo the learning before you move forward. Back to absolute puppy basics to wring every last drop from his bladder before he goes in the crate,

different breed but my little terrier was kept with the other puppies in a pen in the utility room and the whole pen was covered in newspaper so the all peed and pooed where they liked. i found him very difficult to housetrain and he used to come indoors to pee and poo. i just spent every minute watching him and taking him outside, i waited until he did something(which could take up to an hour :() and gave him a treat each time and he gradually got better. i really thought i would never get it sorted but did. good luck

I'd be inclined to wonder if he knows he's peeing? Leakage? Ectopic ureter? Does he dribble any other time?
He has been checked over generally. No he doesn’t leak, and does do a proper wee when he goes out.
I did wonder about getting a urine sample tested.

He was kennelled and I think no bedding, so maybe prefers the soft bed to the stone floor?
I only use non bio (allergies and septic tank) but a good idea about getting bio for the dog beds.
He is pretty good about asking to go out when loose, as in he loses focus and gets restless, he doesn’t actually knock on the door ?

We've not had any issues with any of ours eating the pads, but did have something of a snow storm when one of the rotters had a tantrum and tore up the newspaper we'd used instead ?

I think he has missed out on early training like a house bred pup. Although all bar one of ours were born and raised in kennels. He is older than I’ve dealt with before so possibly slightly more ingrained.
We’ve only had him 6 days so I’m far from despairing. And just got back from lunch out to a dry cage!

I've never raised a kennel raised pup but I've helped others raise pups kept in not so clean environments. Have you tried club soda and baking soda or else some lemon juice to clean the crate? That helps many people. Good luck.

Is the kennel big enough that he can pee and when he lays down he doesn't have to lay in it?
I have used a box with bed for a bed and a mat or newspaper next to it in a crate for kennel bred pups.
They do rip the box up but they tend to keep the bed clean if the 2 areas are separate.
They all get there in the end though.
He is in the big cage now and can wee separate to bed. I’ve always thought don’t give them room to do that but he will smell better!
Thank you

My Reeva was the dirtiest pup I have ever had and she came from filthy kennels, she is clean nowat 3ys but at least doing this like you the puppy was cleaner. I used to put the bed at the door in the crate so they don't walk through mess kn their way out or when they are excited to see you at the front of the crate.

Well we have pretty well got there. He did wee on the dog bed yesterday, entirely my fault.
He is occasionally damp in his cage but I think it’s excitement as much as anything. When he sleeps out of the cage, so most of the time when someone is around, he is dry. I have taken advice and bought bio detergent which is being used for floors, cage and bedding.
He is so calm! He’s an old soul, that’s for sure. I don’t think he’s terribly bright ?. He is very sweet and loving. Although he has missed out on a lot of socialisation he is absolutely fine with other dogs and says hello in a lovely polite manner but he is nervous of people. He will go up to them if they ignore him.
Dog and human neutrality would be good so I take him out whenever I can. I am a bit smitten.

He's lovely. As far as not being the brightest bulb on the tree, several of my friends claim that the b1thces are much smarter than dogs. I say that b1thces use their powers for evil. My boys have been smarter than my girls but GSDs are smart enough that it isn't too big of an issue.

He doesn't need to be bright, just be trainable and have a decent nose, he'll work the rest out and with his fantastic pedigree inherited ability will be high.

Well he’s a dear little thing, very trainable. But he is absolutely hooked on me. If I go upstairs he whinges at the bottom, if I go from one room to another he always follows. It’s good that we have bonded but a bit less stress about the whole thing would be good.
I do all the feeding and training for the whole lot, and am far too much of a control freak to change that. Any ideas for getting him to calm the love down? Is it a boy thing?
