Last Sunday was a very big day here in camp GR, as some of you know back in June I sold my beloved Thoroughbred Major. I had uhhmd and arrrd about it for months, if not years really. Feeling I was missing out on competing, and that I needed something to show me the ropes Eventing. But the decision wasn't an easy one, and even the day I sold him I wasn't sure if I was doing the right thing. But the home was lovely, and the new owners were wonderful, so I let him go after 4 years of ownership and having taught him everything he knew (that wasn't racing!).

I was gutted, but had a new horse on trial immediately to keep me occupied. That horse didn't work out, then another didn't work out, then one was sold whilst I had her on loan..... and basically nothing was quite well.... Major....

I missed him so much, every day, and deeply regretted selling him. But I was happy he was happy and in a nice home.

I contacted his new owners, purely to find out how he was getting on. We got chatting, and she asked me if I regretted selling him.... So I told her that I missed him hugely, but I was glad he was happy.

She contacted me the next day, and offered him back to me.

Fast forward to last Sunday, they delivered him up from their home in Wales, he hasn't been ridden for about 2-3 months and his very fat and hairy. But he is still my lovely kind boy :)

You won't meet a horse with a nicer, more laid back attitude, I jumped straight on him after that long off and having been kept in on isolation for 3 days and the toughest issue I had was getting him moving! Just loving having him home, and I won't make the same mistake again. I will sacrifice any aspirations of showjumping for the time being and hope that Oakley, my youngster can fill those shoes, but in the meantime we will have a lot of fun hunting! :)

:) :)

Basically their daughter (or maybe grandaughter actually) who was going to ride him has gone to college, and the lady already has one horse and didn't have time to ride him. They hadn't planned to sell him as they have their own land and he was keeping a youngster company, it was purely because I had contacted them :)

Thank you all, so pleased to have him home :)

And good luck to you BeingKate, hope you find yours!

Aaaaaaahhh!!! Lovely, lovely post.

Sometimes we don't really realise what we had until it's gone and most of us don't get the chance to get it back. I am so happy that you and Major were fortunate enough to beat the odds.

What was his reaction? Was he pleased to see you?

My mum is sure he recognised me, and he did come straight to me and didn't say hello to any of the other people that were there with me. But I don't really know if that means anything or what. But I was too busy trying not to be a girl and cry.... cried when he left, cried when he returned!

That has given me a lovely warm feeling and brought a big smile to my face, I am so very pleased for the both of you. Lovely pictures Gawjus springs to mind. Enjoy your time together look forward to seeing more from you both .

Of course he recognised you - they don't forget. I'm so glad to hear that he came back to you. Whenever I read your updates, I always thought that you made a wonderful pair. I suppose sometimes these things are just meant to be :)

My old mare Teasle went to horseworld to retire as I was working such immense hours and a good friend from college worked there. 6 years passed and I was driving from Hinton to Pucklechurch (Dusty85) will know the road...I was driving along and saw a grey being ridden further ahead up the road. I thought, "That's got a bum like Teasle", which almost immediately changed to me feeling very faint and exclaiming to my empty car, "OH MY GOD....TEASLE!!!!" before bursting into tears. I passed her, pulled up in a layby and got out. I started walking towards her, smiling and crying and she whinnied and trotted up to me and buried her head in my chest just as she did every day when I groomed her. The poor woman riding her took a little explanation before she relaxed, but she ended up in tears as well.

Time means nothing to a horse when you have loved them and they have bonded with you. Turns out she cam sound to hack and was placed in a home less than 2 miles from where I was living. This was in South Gloucestershire and when she went to horseworld, I was living in South Wales and London.

I will never forget her reaction to me. I hadn't called her or anything, just instant recognition :)

Got me blubbing now....bl00dy horses!

What a beautiful story :)

Girlracer that is a lovely story! He looks very relaxed about being back, though I love the look in his eyes with the tack back on ;) And I'm sure he did recognise you, my boy in Spain does when I go back even if there's a few months in between (I think he just thinks I'm some weird stalker, wherever he goes (Spain, Berkshire, Exmoor, back to Spain) I turn up...).

GG - you just brought tears to my eyes with that story!!!

This story is so lovely and made me feel extremely warm and fuzzy, not least because even after 3 years I get that 'should I have, shouldnt I have' kind of feeling about my old horse. He was never going to be the all rounder I wanted but I was the most gentle and loving soul, and the perfect horse in 90% of ways. I am lucky I still see him weekly, he is well loved and I still get the ocassional ride, but if circumstances ever change, I would not hesitate to try and get him back!

So happy for you and your horse- he looks lovely! :)
