Other half wants a dog. Given current circumstances I think its VERY stupid but it's not my choice. We've talked about it and I managed to talk him out of getting something to breed *first head desk* and we agreed that a rescue or a Lab would be nice. A size we both like, I know what to avoid (although would be asking you lovely folks for what I'm looking for in hip scores etc) and he wouldn't want to breed them because of the possible problems. It would fit in with us and would be something a bit more trainable than the corgi's and he wants to get back into shooting. Perfect.

He's currently at a friends who is IMO a profit hungry backyard breeder....I met her and she spent 20 mins debating if Corgi/Pug puppies would be cute!! He's currently playing with Shopugs(!!!) and now really wants one.....for £500!!! I paid that for my VERY well bred KC registered SHOW QUALITY Corgi bitch!!

Luckily he can't afford one but is on about having one from the next litter. I seriously want to smack him and I don't want one (we're going to be living together soon which is why I think it should be a dog we both want). How the hell do I put him off?!! He knows I don't like the idea but will just get in a huff and buy one out of spite if I say no. I actually want to smack him atm!

If you send him this way I'll smack him for you! Can you try encouraging his plan to get back into shooting, and tell him all his shooting mates would mock him for having a toy breed. I do know pugs can be lovely little dogs but need must in this situation. What is the sho part of the cross anyway?

Shih tzu......but 'Shopugs' should cuter *head desk*

I like pugs but I fully admit I don't want a toy breed never mind a designer mongrel!

If my other half bought something out of spite to annoy me I would ditch him!

Show him my reply, that might work! lol... ps i wasn't joking!

Er, tell him he is being ripped off? I paid that (slightly less actually, if you consider the exchange rate) for a pup from parents who have been show graded for conformation, with top working titles, both of which have competed at world level, five generations of health tested and titled dogs behind him - your OH really wants to pay that for a crossbred dog, no idea what is lurking in the lines health wise and he has no idea what it will even look like as an adult?!

Exactly!! I'm totally against the whole bloody thing and now he wants me to meet the mutts on my birthday!

I'm actually really angry at him for being so bloody stupid and impulsive! Not to mention the fact I'll be the one left looking after the little thing and I don't like small dogs!

Pug owner here who thinks nothing sounds more disastrous than a snub-nosed breed mixed with a large, long-backed breed. The poor dog will hardly be able to move!

Can't really imagine one of those retrieving anything much bigger than a sparrow!

Show him some shooting pics off here, try and get him hooked back onto that idea instead.

Gun dog? I have a local contact, FTCH championship lines, under £500, health tests, injections etc, kept til they're 3 months for thorough socialisation. Tell your OH he's mental!

Please don't get a Shopug!

(P.S. if this picture doesn't break, him nothing will!)

You can't possibly get a dog you don't agree on if you're going to live together. This dog is going to be basically like a kid for you both, it's such a big deal. It doesn't bode very well for the relationship if he's going to sulk and get one out of spite

lq22, never mind Annette's oh, please post that pupster to me!

And look how noble and handsome they look when they are all grown up:

Spudlet - Couldn't live without my Skye!

She's 5 now but you wouldn't think it with how playful she can be

OP- plenty more pictures to tempt your OH on my profile page

Lol, cannot help you with "what to do" cos I am a full on bitch and when i'm angry what I say goes in my house, otherwise it's not worth the wrath my OH would face.
Tell him you an gt a rescue designer X breed for pittance from the fall back of back street breeders and I could provide u piccies, we have also just been handed a gorgeous black lab puppy (can show u him) to prove u can get those in rescue too, and we rehomed a stunning example of a black lab bitch not to long ago £650 when bought full pedigree handed in and health tests of parents.
Tell him about th health issues on either side of the cross he has in mind and expect the too:rolleyes:

So if he had ripped apart your decision regarding corgi's would he still be your OH??
Let him get what he wants so long as it is well trained, managed by him and healthy as can be, from parents wihich are well treated. Anything beside that is irrelevant really, looks are going to be his personal preference.
(But of course- a lab is much more fun than a 'Shopug' thing that will probably struggle to breath if it walks further than a few hundred yards if that)

I take it he know's people who already retrieve with their dogs??? Has he actually spoken to them about his urge to buy a very expensive mutt (imagine he hasn't cos I'd hear them laughing from here!) ...and lets face it a GIRLS very expensive mutt???? I'm sorry but there is something very very wrong with a 'man' that wants a mutt of that breeding. I'd dump him and go out and get yourself a real fella before this one starts borrowing your clothes and make up. ;)

Sort of beat him to it. Why don't you incorporate your day out to see these puppies to day out to a rescue...

While I am fully on your side, think you will need to employ a bit of feminine wile here. Head to head confrontation is not a great idea if you think he would just go ahead and buy the dog anyway as you then have a fait accompli. Do you know any of his shooting friends who could put a good word in? If he is really digging his heels in then I would go down the route of "how would you feel if I went out and bought a dog YOU didn't want?".

I don't normally advocate side stepping rows btw, its just because you could end up no way out on this.

Ermmm......well.....it's a bit complicated but OH is technically a girl on his way to being a boy ;) :p

I doubt he would buy an animal just out of spite, but it would be more of a 'well I want one and you don't live here so I'm going to do what will make me happy'.

I spoke to him after he got home last night about actual practicalities and he's decided to wait until we're living together to see how he gets on with looking after my two before he goes looking for another dog....thank goodness!! I know we'll be fine and we'll find the perfect dog for both of us :)

Oh right, i thought that but then i thought you may just mean you were going to rip his balls off for being an idiot and turn him into a woman.

how is that taken when he is shooting?

Well he's not been since I went with his dad as a child (so a little girl then) so not sure how it would be taken. I presume it would just be he is Carl and they won't say much. His work only know him and Carl the bloke.

Oh wow. can i just say its amazingly brave to know you want to change and to actually do it.

but definitely tell him to get a proper dog, otherwise his days of shooting will be uncomfortable lol. :D

(i know you must get this all the time but when he is a man does that undo your gay-ness)

Lol....nope....he doesn't plan to have bottom surgery so although he will be living as a man he still has the fun bit ;) :p I'm in love with him at the end of the day not the outside but I still see myself as gay.
