My cat is going to the vet this evening.

He has FIV and has had a scabby jaw and ears and he's been scratching them open and its pretty painful for him and its becoming infected.

One previous vet said it was dermititus and i shouldnt treat it due to his FIV - im beginning to think this is nonsense!

I'm very worried that this is the FIV virus kicking in and he will have to be PTS :(

I've got my fingers crossed that its a simple skin infection and that it can be treated without lowering his immune system too much.

I am at work and cant stop worrying about him :(

Of course it's nonsense - the cat has a compromised immune system, so will always need help overcoming infections, illness etc.

Good luck today.

I am feeling bad that I believed the first vet and didnt go back for a second opinion sooner. It looks more like an infection rather than dry dermititus now anyway.
I'm taking him to my horse vets tonight an hours drive away because i trust them alot more (they do cats too :))

Don't feel bad - we pay the experts for the expertise. Sometimes we get it wrong though.

Let us know how it goes.

I will - I have my fingers firmly crossed that he can be treated effectively, its horrible to watch him scratch and scratch.
He's only one and a half and a beautiful all over grey puss with fluffy cheeks!! (although they'd be fluffier if he wasnt pulling his furr out!)

Actually I see where the vet's coming from. Dermatitis is treated with topical steroids, many of which are immunosupressants. If your cat already has a compromised immune system, this is the last thing you want. Perhaps that's what the vet means - to not treat with steroids?

Sending vibes for the little cat. xx

p.s. if it is dermatitis (or infected dermatitis), think about changing his diet, especially as you mention pulling his fur out. One of mine can't eat any high grain foods (and trust me, I was buying the best, including the organic brands!). If he does, he gets stupidly itchy, also pulls fur out and displays IBS symptoms for good measure.

I think maybe the vibes are working :)
The vet thinks he has miliary ezcema with rodent ulcers. He has to have antibiotics twice a day for a week and another tablet every 2 days for a few weeks. He had the tablets last night and he was much more settled and didn't wake me up cleaning/scratching through the night! Hurray!
I'm going to buy baby socks and tape them to him back paws today to help with the scratching until the cuts heal up.

I have changed his diet a few times with no success.

Fingers (and padded out paws) crossed this will cure it.

Your poor puddy cat. We had some who had FIV years ago, sadly alot of rescue cats can suffer from it from my past experience, may be a bit different nowadays.
Glad it went ok at the vets, *lots of good vibes* being sent his way x

Glad he seems better. The only diet change which worked for my boy was raw food. I'm cheating a bit and mixing it with felix (plus, he'll only eat cooked chicken wings), but he's doing well on that!

Ooh, have you tried clipping his claws, too? I used to keep Cleetus' claws blunt when he was going through a bad spell, otherwise he would cut himself open, he scratched so hard!

Yes I trim his claws as short as possible, but he now has baby socks taped to his back ones as he still manages to cut himself.
I suggest everyone puts baby socks on a cat at some point - probably the funniest thing I've witnessed in a long time!!
He can't have raw food if he has FiV as it can introduce bacteria into his system - so I've read anyway.

Thanks for all your lovely messages - there is a lot of cat lovers out there :D
