healing vibe's

I had to rush mine to RVC last Thursday evening with a nasty field injury to his pastern. I think I might have seen your mare while I was there. They were very busy, I spoke to the vet about it when mine was discharged they said they finished at 4am and started again at 6am 😬

My lovely boy had surgery on Friday then impaction colic in the early hours of Sunday morning so it's been a stressful and expensive week. He was discharged on Wednesday, he's got a cast on to stabilise the wound and facing a long period of box rest, currently coping well. Hope your mare is doing ok.

Oh no Im so sorry. I hope things improve very soon for both of you.

Turned her out today and yet again she stood for 45 or so not moving, then went back and she was in with my caravan area eating all the grass.

So symptom's are slightly dryer poor than normal.
Eating of wet food wet haylage
recovery mash. I am hoping the bloods show tape worm as that would be something we can treat

As tape worm can cause colic and impactions
and can contribute to dehydrated.

yes been trying and are doing that, it is so hard. It is the what caused the colic I am worried and why is she keep getting dehydrated that worries me.
It really is hard, would she eat a small watery mash every two hours? Or apple juice?? Or Plenty of salt in the mash to make her want to drink.

I spoke to saracens and they said mas 3 kilos a day, i was doing two measures of 250gms 5 times a day, but this morning she tipped one over.
Vet did say I was feeding her too much haylage and to reduce it down by 5 kilos. Then started going on about ulcers and such, but insurance won't cover this or the colic at RVC and still paying for my sports horse on sales livery.

So the haylage could be backing her up , Id reduce it a lot and keep just the mashes, for two weeks solid thats all bb got, that and hand pulled grass. You could do that, hand pull some grass or do hand grazing?

How is she tonight ? Definitely doesn’t sound right xx if any signs of impaction the haylage could be making her worse possibly x how long until
You get bloods back

She has had some recovery mash and now eating her wet haylage. I just worked out the days when i got a 60 kilo haylage, it wasn't very nice it was dark moburnt and was warm in side in some of it and very seedy. I got that one the 19th June and the colic was 26th June, my other mare had it too but she is ok. Its all gone now thank god, so that would not have helped.
Bloods were taken Friday so prob Monday or Tuesday. She was getting small haynet when coming in, then 5 kilos at 5

and 10 kilos at 10.

Way to much, so cut it down as per vets instructions to 2.5 kilos at 5 and 7.5 kilos at 10. She thinks the quantity is not helping, so we shall see although a bit early just 1 over night, see if she is any different tomorrow having had less over night.

When Rigs was recovering from his colic, he wasn't allowed haylage for days. He started at half an hour grazing then an hour or two on hardstanding, plus 4 meals a day of salty sugar beet. It was infuriating for both of us, and especially as he didn't have much poo to show, but I think it is important to restart the guts really slowly.

Last time, he didn't eat for almost a week because the impaction was so bad, and restarting him took as long as he was stopped, at least.

I would cut down on haylage asap, hand graze intermittently through the day, with rest time in-between, and any feed would be a sloppy soup rather than a feed.

This is what I would do.

Just thought I would update for those on this thread. Well I decided to do no exercise while this heat was on, as worried the heat and sweating would cause her to dehydrate again. So this week it will start slowly.
It has been a tough 2 weeks since the colic, watching all the time, going out to watch her standing for ages in one place not grazing, then a little graze and standing, recovery mashes 4-5 times a day Mentally draining. Well it has gradually lessened the standing to the point the last 2 days I have not seen her do it except coming in time. The recovery mash is getting boring now, so this morning I put some of her cherry electrolytes in her feed, and when she went out she had a good long drink.

So my way forward now in the summer is wet haylage and electrolytes and recovery mash. She was one of the lucky ones, plenty more don't make it. I know I lost 3 to colic myself. Never gone through this 2 week recovery before, the others who made it within 3 days back to normal.

Nice not of gut balances inc equinector.

So thanx for the healing vibes everyone - it is times like this ( ill horses) that it is comforting having people who have been there before or just thinking about the person and their horse that is ill all pulling together and following the journey.

again Thankyou from my Girly and me.
