hi

I'm fairly new to this forum, just feel like i need to do this.

Last week i decided that i was going to have my gorgeous mare put to sleep.

She went lame in August last year, and after numerous tests overnight stays at the vets, i was told they thought is was soft tissue damage in the foot, and advised box rest. after 8 months she came very nearly sound, i was allowed to take her out for walks and eventually turned out, but after two months she slowly went down hill and quite lame again. she's 21, a TB and has had a very active life eventing in her earlier years. she had changed in herself, no longer a happy mare, and so on Friday i've got to say goodbye to her forever, i've owned her for 11 years and known her for 16. i'm devastated, but i know its the right thing for her, shes in pain even on bute, i dont want her to have to go through any more tests etc.

sorry this is a bit of a downer, but kind of needed to get it off my chest. i'd have added a photo of her if i knew how!

Open a photobucket account, upload your pic from the PC to photobucket, then use the last link, cope and paste it, into your reply xxx

I'm really saddened to read your post - you can hear your heartbreak in every line

It has to be the WORST part of horse ownership - but you are right - you've done the right thing and stood by your horse when she needed you most - You gave her the very best of attention and diagnosis and you knew when to call it a day - That's the best thing you could've done - It doesn't help you though - you will be left with a huge gaping hole - it will take a long time to overcome your heartbreak - but day by day - year by year it will become easier - time (as they say) is a great healer - and thankfully that's true.

Cant say anything to make it easier. You have done your best for her and if she is in pain and unhappy then you have made the right decision. It is a very hard decision to make and you are incredibly brave to put your horses wellbeing before your own needs.

There are more than a few of us on here that have been through the pain of having a horse pts and you have my thoughts. As the others have said, you've done all you can and you know in your heart of hearts that it is the right thing to do.
I found that once the deed was actually done, although I was devestated, there was also relief because I knew he was no longer suffering.

thanks for all of the replies, and how to add the photos.
, my OH has been great, but not being horsey he doesn't really understand completely!
Shes been such a good girl and not at all 'chestnut mareish'

I went through exactly the same thing with my old gelding nearly 4 years ago now, so I know how dreadful you must be feeling. But you are doing the right thing for your horse - I'm sure you know that already.

It will be the hardest day for you on Friday. Keep strong and feel secure in the knowledge that when your horse really needed you to do the right thing, you did it.

Sending you big hugs.

Ahh yes absolutely gorgeous horse, thoughts are with you at this sad time. Dont forget you are being her best friend, which is all she could ask for. xx

Sorry for your loss I know it is a hard decision to make but you did the right thing for her. Just remember that you never forget them but it does get easier.

what a beautiful girl. I am so sorry you have had to make this awful decision. You are so doing the right thing tho, if she is is in pain and unhappy then it is the only option. I stayed with a friends horse a few weeks ago while she 'went to sleep' and it was very peaceful. She was the same age as yours and had had such a lovely life and was very much loved, just like your girly. It was heartbreaking but we knew it was right.
Enjoy the next few days with her and give her all the treats she enjoys.

Will be thinking of you on Friday.

Poor you! She looks lovely and it must be a horrible decision but you are doing the right thing. Try to think about the lovely times you had together and it will get easier with time.

I am sincerely sorry to hear this. May the sun shine on her for the rest of the week and I wish you enough strength to see Friday through. Give her plenty of love and treats to get her to The Bridge and may you see her there someday.

She looks beautiful, and a well loved lady. Stay around and let us support you until you are feeling yourself again.

oh bless her i'm so sorry to hear you've had to make that painful decision. Try and look at it that you are doing the kindest thing for her and you are relieving her from her pain, letting her go with the dignity that she deserves.
losing a horse is such a physical loss, i felt like my heart had actually torn in half when i lost my old girl, the pain was so real i thought i'd pass out. that was nearly 2 years ago and although i still miss her dearly i can now look back on the good times we have and it's a good feeling.
Enjoy your week with her, cuddle her lots and then let her go knowing you have done the very best for her.

Like others who have responded I've had to do this twice. It isn't easy. However, a friend said something to me after the first time which I hope will help. She told me she didn't think she would be able to make the decision for her horses and be as brave as I'd been. I wasn't brave- I just like you did the right thing. Hold onto this thought and it does help the pain pass quicker. Knowing when the right time is the right time is one of the most wonderful thing that we can do for our horses.
Look at it as a privilege which shows how much you care.

Thanks everyone, its been really good to read all your replies. i know its daft, but until now i felt like i was the only person who has ever felt like this, its just been nice to know other people have been through this and carried on...

So sorry to hear about your mare. It sounds like you have done everything possible and if she's no longer having a good quality of life you are doing the right thing for her ((((hugs))))

Done this more than once, it never gets easier, but you know that you have done as well for her at the end as you have during her life. This is the price we pay for the joy and fun, so sorry for you, will be thinking of you on Friday.

i am so sorry for you i know how heart breaking it is i had to have mine put down last week due to liver diease i still cry every day she has only been gone just over a week it seems like it has been forever but the funny thing is my head is telling me iam going to see her very soon. are you having het cremated?

What a beautiful horse.

I am so saddened to read your post. I've not lost a horse yet, but reading posts like yours always sadden me as I know that one day my time to experience these emotions will come.

Hugs to you and sleep well chestnut gee-gee.

This is every owners nightmare time and you are absolutely doing the right thing by her. She cannot live in constant pain and you are being very responsible in putting her needs before your own.

I really feel for you. x
