I know that we have had a few 'pea on a drum' and 'pony squishing' threads but I was wondering what is the minimum height you would like to see on a 17.1hh? Not strong and snaffle mouthed even for hunting. Just wondering.

why would you have a minimum height?

The shortest person you would want to see on a 17.1hh...out of interest really.

I used to ride a friends 17.3 quite a lot and i'm 5ft7 so i don't think you'd look silly at 5ft8.

I'm 5ft 4 and George is 16.3, think we look ok:

It depends a lot on the build of the horse, a LW horse will take up less leg than a HW, so the same rider could look completely different on different horses of the same height!

I wouldn't say there is a minimum height, I know some young children who can ride 17hh plus better than many adults

Aww George - wow I would have thought you looked about 5ft 6 on him at least.

I would say ride whatever is comfortable but taller people always tend to look a bit better on the larger ones. Maybe about 5ft 8 for a 17.1 as a rough guide. Not that I can talk being 5ft 8 and riding a 15hh!!!!!

It depends on the build of the horse really. I am 5ft 11 and ride a 17.2.
I couldnt say a rough height as some horses take up peoples legs different to others.
I would say though anyone shorter than 5ft 10 would look silly on mine though due to his build.

I'm 5ft4 and ride old YO's 17hh bbut I wouldn't choose to ride one that big (although she's a shire so wide too) as I feel I can't ride effectively....I've ridden 16.3hh tb types and felt ok though. I don't like the idea of having a long way to fall either so smaller neds for me

I think 5'8 would be the "ideal" minumum height for a 17.1hh. i'm 5'11 and was told the 17.2hh i used to ride was the only horse my mum had ever seen me on that actually took up my leg

I still prefer 15.2hh!

I think Iam about the limit for my 16.3hh at 5'9'' but he is all legs and no barrel!! so I have to change ,my position quite a bit in order to get him working properly where as I feel like a pea on a drum on the 17.2hh I used to ride but he was a native cross so was a bit wider and very deep through the girth so could take some one very tall . Kitsune - that looks a fab school by the way!!
