Hi all.
I have a 6 year old big cob mare, who is strong when she wants to be!!!
I hunted her last season with limited breaks, she went better in the grackle at first with a loose ring waterford but after a couple of times she then evaded it again and was able to go , tried her in waterford gag which she hated (i couldn't touch her mouth or she flew her head in the air).
I have her in a expert bits comfy universal snaffle at the moment ( i only use snaffle if hacking around or on fun rides with a couple of us as shes not strong then) BUT i have found lately she will jsut suddenly snatch reins and pull down .
She has had her teeth done, back checked and saddle checked so I know its not pain related.

Would a kineton be a better option than the grackle?

TIA :)

Hello and welcome to the forum! I can't help with your query unfortunately but you may find more people will see your question if you post a separate thread in the tack room because it's a fair bit busier than here :)

It might well help with your horse. I used one on my old mare for xc and it gave me feather light controls, she is very sensitive to nose pressure. If you can, get an adjustable one so you can alter the fit- tighter will increase the influence of the nose pressure and looser will mean it takes marginally longer to come into action. You may need to play with that a bit.

I wouldn't normally think it was the obvious choice for one that snatches down but no harm in trying if that's a new thing.
Mine just ran through the bridle and wouldn't accept curb or poll pressure so nose was the next option.

People will say you should use with a full cheek snaffle but i used it with a loose ring Waterford with success, just pay attention to the fit to avoid pinching. I found it highly effective, do not be surprised if your horse finds it quite strong, you may need to be fairly sensitive .

I thought a kineton was normally only used for leading racehorses however, I did know someone many years ago who used to ride her very strong pony on one for cross country. Have her brakes

I used a kineton noseband on my strong pony when we did cross country or group rides. It worked well for him.

No not the same but they were/are used for leading as well as riding.

You cannot ride in a chifney  I think you're thinking of a dexter ring bit; it has a ring which superficially resembles that of a chifney but also has a snaffle component. They're used a lot in racehorses as well though but you can ride and lead in them.
