Hi everyone, I signed up and while ago and have been lurking ever since so thought I should say an official hello!
I'm Sarah, from Plymouth and I have recently bought my 16h rising 3yo American Quarter Horse, Layla (I hope pics work??).

I'm planning to break her in slowly (she's an odd horse & needs time to get used to things!) then plod around the lanes for a while before generally having some fun!
In the end I'd like to do a bit of jumping, pleasure rides and maybe try out her western roots!

When I first got her:

To any very clever/western people out there, she's passported as "perlino" (colour), what on earth is this and how does it differ to cremello?

And now for the long shot - Layla's full name is Talawater Princess Layla, and she was bred by my best friend's mum who has been breeding QHs for years. I grew up spending most weekends at their farm so got to know the mares and foals pretty well.
Just wondering if any one owns or knows of any "Talawater" Quarter Horses as it would be nice to see them grown up.
Especially Talawater Hiawather (sp) who was a big bay QH x Shire and my fave growing up!!

A perlino is a bay that's homozygous for the creme gene. A bay with just one copy of the gene would be buckskin.

A chestnut with one copy of the creme gene is palomino, and two copies makes a cremello.

To try and put it as simply as possible
A Cremello is a double dilution of a chestnut, a single dilution would be a palomino.
A Perlino is a double dilution of a bay, a single would be a buckskin.

Both Cremellos and Perlinos carry the creme gene twice, they are both will always breed 'colour'.

Edited to say, she is very pretty, love the picture of her charging around the field :) And Welcome

Hello and welcome. She is beautiful :)

I don't know about these things but if you're looking for her relatives you could possibly try PMing the user Enfys. She always seems to know about these things or knows someone who does! There are people on here with quarter horses but I can't ever remember their names but I'm sure she could tell you who they are. She is lovely too :D

I have to say she does look more Cremello to me than Perlino. She doesn't appear to have any more colouring to her points, mane or tail that would indicate the presence of the agouti gene. She may however just be pale :) It is very hard to tell without knowing her complete genetic history :p

Thank you for the welcome and to everyone who tried to explain the colour...I've never understoof the whole gene thing, but no matter, she is what she is!

Her mum is a bay roan and her sire is the spitting image of her if that helps, Team Barney?!

And thanks to everyone know said she's pretty - she thinks so too, she's a massive show off!

DaisyDo - I'm ashamed to say if she'd had a bath, her tail would be as grey as the rest of her :o

And sorry for posting copyrighted images - I do have permission!!!

Wow what a beauty, she knows it too. But a friendly face. Love the plait...she is a stunner, very impressive. Good luck with her

I thought I'd posted something and forgotten about it there!! LOL! Surreal moment!

What a beautiful horse she is!
