Gah! This happens to me every year once I start wearing woolly hats all the time.
Tack up and merrily head off over the horizon……
And it’s not till I’m miles down the road I realise it’s my woolly hat i've still got on. Not my helmet! Does anyone else’s brain do this? Short of putting my helmet on the gate with a giant sign pointing at it saying “Your helmet Dummy!” I need to find a way of remembering my helmet. This never happens in summer. Please tell me this happens to other people. :o

Somehow my brain registers I’m wearing something on my head so thinks I’m good to go. This is the second time in a fortnight. I’m lucky my horse is so good to me. Today I was wearing a giant woolly hat with a ridiculously oversized bobble and was getting strange looks from passers-by before it registered that my head was covered in the protective equivalent of candyfloss :o

I do this!
Years ago i set off for a hack on a 4 yr old i was bringing on. She could be a little monster at the time and prone to dramatics but thankfully that day she was as good as gold.
Realised i wasnt waring a hat after i got back and went to take it off!
Went all hot and sweaty when i thought about what could have happened!

This happened to a friend of mine this evening, walked out with her and half way round realised she only had her bobble hat on! Felt naked all of a sudden!

I do it more in summer with a baseball cap on for some reason - think its cos its peaked too?!

Done as everyone else has , half way down the lane on youngers, scratch ur head - oh plop thats never good :D

Glad it's not just me, just lots of slightly dreamy horsey girls wandering the countryside on horseback in bobble hats:o

I had to stop wearing hats for this reason. I now wear a fleecey or fake fur head band instead... Enough to keep ears & some head warm but not so much I forget to put riding hat on. They also make wonderful neck warmers if I just it down out of the way to put hat on :)

Put your hat where our have to move it to get something else like saddle and put it on rather than move it.

Hardly ever wear a wooly hat but had just started! Scared I do this now!!

I'm glad I'm not the only one too!! I done that the other day and even a friend saw me get on then went along the lane passed our school which had people in there not one of them said anything. I never ride without a hat even more as his only been back into work 6 weeks after a year off and riding bareback!!

Me too certainly, trick I have now is to keep my gloves in my hat - not ideal as they aren't that clean but I'd never get on without gloves (feel really odd without them)

I keep my gloves and hi viz in my hat so no danger of forgetting it. Though I rarely wear hats as I get a really hot head.......

Nope, I do it with wellies/riding boots!
Why not clip your hat to your saddle? Mine lives hooked to the saddle rack and I always see it there.

I've got a thin knitted hat that I wear under my riding hat, covers my ears really well....but have to change straight back into my trapper hat when we get back. Never gone out in the trapper - so far. ;)

Thankfully that has never happened, if I know I'm riding I wear a thin hoody, so it's routine now to tack up, Hi Viz hat on and go.
Bit like work, I need a special key to get into my office, it's now habit to check I have it

Once I got on and warmed up for a lesson without my het and only noticed when my instructor arrived and pointed it out. It felt a bit wierd not to have it on but we did the lesson, cooled off with a walk down the lane and all was fine.

I now have a silly chant I do as I walk to the school: "Boots boots gaiters and boots, saddle bridle hat." (Say it like this: Pugh, Pugh, Barney McGrew,Cuthbert, Dibble Grub.)(I'm not actually old enough to remember Trumpton - I had a video of it when i was small)

As for Hi-viz; it's still enough of a novelty on our yard that no one forgets it!
