I wonder if anyone can help?
Currently I've got a Champion velvet cap that has a fixed brim but I've been told that if I want to do XC I need a skull cap.
Is that right? I've also been told that I have an "odd head" (people are so complimentary to me some days) and that the velvet caps fit my head better and that I won't get a skull to fit me.
:)

i have a 'normal' head as far as i know! but i find the ap mccoy hats fit a bit wierd so maybe they would fit you?! Also, i have a champion euro deluxe and they are very accommodating when new so should mould to fit anything.

Yes, a skull cap is required to compete in XC, and there will be brands that fit you. I think the idea that they won't probably arises from skull caps often being recommended to people with very round heads who are finding hat fitting difficult. There are skull caps that will suit other shapes too, just as there's brands of traditional riding hats that suit some shapes and not others: you just need to try a range of them on your noggin at the local tack shop if you can!

i think you need to go to a big saddler who stocks lots of makes and get your skull cap fitted. the shapes vary from make to make! once you find one that you think is comfey wear it in the shop for 10 to 15 mins to check it really is comfey!

I went the other way, dressage/hunting to X-Country. My Champion fixed peak velvet was a beautiful fit but it took me many trips to find a skull that fitted me as well. In the end I found a Charles Owen Junior fitted me great. I would never thought as an adult that a 'kids' hat would fit me but because I have a small head it was a great result!

Thanks for the advice! :) I'll have to shop around and visit a few more places to find some different brands. Always wanted a Gatehouse but they really don't work.
Oddly enough I was reminded tonight that the only time I've whacked my head and got concussion was the time I fell off the station platform (5ft straight down onto my forehead). That might explain my odd head shape. Suddenly horse riding looks safe.......
