Hello all. Turning to the forum in the hope that there might be some pearls of wisdom amongst the knowledgeable cat folk on here...
Just before Christmas my OH's old (approx 18yo) and much loved cat disappeared. He was in fine form in the morning, shouting for breakfast as usual, then had his lunch as usual and at some point in the afternoon he popped out and never came back. We tramped around everywhere locally looking for him, had all neighbours checking outhouses etc but he had vanished. We assumed that in spite of showing no signs that he must have taken himself off to die somewhere and mourned him as gone because even if he was still out there somewhere we had had some fairly brutal storms in the following 48 hours that it seemed unlikely he would have survived.

But then on Saturday night, a neighbour sent a message with a screenshot from a private fb group of people in the local town where a lady was asking about a cat that she had fed the last couple of days because it had been meowing insistently outside her door. Sure enough it was our cat so we rushed on down and collected him. He was found approx three miles from home, so we are assuming that he must have got into the van of the electrician that was on the lane that day, because cant think how else he would have got that far across some pretty busy roads.

Despite all the odds he seemed OK in himself - was meowing and purring, happy to be home and curled up on the bed. But he had lost most of his body weight and is now skin and bones. He ate that evening we brought him home, and then 4 or 5 small meals the next day, but yesterday he only ate a very small amount in the morning and then wasn't really tempted by anything we offered him in the evening, and again this morning he is not interested ☹️. Still drinking fine (maybe slightly more than normal, but I'm not sure)

Planning to take him to the vets later today as I'm kind of assuming that there is some renal failure going on there, but thought I would ask on here whether anyone has any go-to foods that will tempt a cat to eat? He has always been fussy about food, rarely eating dry food his whole life. When he was younger he used to catch himself rabbits fairly frequently (never chased anything else much) but as he's aged he has eaten just a variety of wet foods, with several different brands kept in the house at a time as he frequently does the cat thing of eating one type vivaciously for a few days before deciding it is poison and demanding something else. Yesterday we have tried tuna, sardines and two types of cat food but despite seeming hungry, when he goes to eat he just ends up turning away after sniffing and licking it.

ETA: sorry that is so long!

Glad that you’ve found him.

Very few cats will turn down Dreamies. I imagine that while they are probably not the healthiest of foods they might be worth a try to get him eating again?

He’s a good age, and it might be his time, but just maybe if he’ll eat you can help him to pick back up.

Good luck.

Ah thanks, yes that's a good idea, will pop and get some at lunch.

Yep, can't believe he survived sleeping rough and foraging for 16 days, do it seems like he's got the fight in him to recover if we can find something that will help him pick up, but on the flip side maybe the effort of it all is catching up with him physically...

Try something smelly like sardines or tuna or warm the food so it is more appealing. You were so lucky to find him! He might have some stomach issues if he was foraging for himself so I would definitely get him checked out at the vets.

When the late lamented King Kevin Kat refused to eat anything except fresh roast chicken and then refused to eat that, I tried fresh salmon, tinned sardines, anything in a previous animal/fish/fowl life that had walked the earth, flown or swum. When he refused that, I took him to the vet. I knew that this was the end. He was diagnosed with a stomach tumour and kidney failure. He was pts.

Mackerel in tomato sauce, that's my If they're not eating this, there's no other food in my house which will tempt them to eat-food. I always have some cans at home. Besides that, one can also try both heating the food/pouring some warm water over it just before serving (because food that is a bit warm smells more which can make it more interesting), or serving the food a bit cooled (don't know why that should work, only that supposedly some cats might prefer it that way).

Is it possible that he might've damaged a tooth while being gone? Otherwise, if you/a vet can't find any other reason to him not wanting to eat, maybe his B¹² levels are too low, that can cause a loss of appetite.

Well chicken for the win so far today (thank you RF, and sorry again about your loss of HRH) - he's just eaten about half a chicken leg and seemed to be wanting more, but I'll give it an hour or so. And will fetch mackerel and coley (or similar) at lunch. Found some dreamies in tthe back of the cupboard but he wasn't interested, they might be a bit old though.

Token picture of him from just before he disappeared

Glad he's eaten some chicken! The yoghurty treats like Lik-e-lix are usually pretty tempting, you can get versions in Aldi and B&M as well as in main supermarkets and pet stores. He's gorgeous, I hope he picks up soon.

Very glad he's back DD. 🥰
That's an amazing age for a cat, so very possible it's getting near his time. I would get teeth , temp and kidneys checked
It's a common reaction for cats to eat a lot when safely home again , they're a bit hyped up to be back . They can then sort of go into pheww mode and sleep a lot .
Nothing major to add as he's clearly enjoying the chicken, so will hopefully continue to improve. Little and often is definitely the best way as his stomach will have shrunk.
Lovely cat DD XXX

My cat loves cheese and it would be nicely calorific if he'll eat some. Good strong gritty cheddar is her preference, she goes more wild for cheese that she does for Dreamies and she's bad enough with them. I hope you can get him eating DD.

My fussy 19 year old will eat anything, but preferably room temperature chicken, if smothered in the yogurt squeezy treats recommended above, any flavour. Hope he is back on form soon.

He's gorgeous and what a good age to get to. It could be his teeth. Sniffing the food then turning away is often a sign that they need some dental work doing. I have always found that chicken and cheese (best cheddar as YCBM suggests) are best for tempting cats to eat. I hope he's ok.

Dreamies always made my cat vomit though the Whiskas ones didn't for some reason.
Have you tried warming the food before giving it her ? , that may tempt her.

I’ve had a lot of success with foods described as a mousse or pate but sometimes hand-feeding (of whatever it is) makes all the difference. I’m not suggesting you need to hand-feed forever but in circumstances where you really need them to be tempted and build strength, it has generally worked for me to get them going again. Aldi sells small tins of a mousse type food which works well, but there are lots of better quality options too of course.

I'm another who has found cheese works. Tiny bits (or grated). My little cat needs to be tempted with lots of bits of different things when she's stopped eating

Glad he's home. My yard cat who is probably around 20 went walkabout last year and I thought that was it. Put a call out on FB after 10 days to see if anyone had seen a body and he literally rocked up like nothing had happened an hour later. Didn't realise he was on the village FB site 🙄

Really glad you've got him eating a bit, and am keeping my fingers crosed for the vet check.

My cat would have sold his his soul for a bit of liver or cheddar. He also liked to lick Philadelphia off my fingers. (this is pre-Dreamies)

News at the vets wasn't good, assumed to be some kind of foreign body blockage that had worked its way into an awkward position and had caused his stomach to bloat with gas. Vet offered a surgical option with an extremely guarded prognosis, but of course at 18 that wouldn't be fair so he was PTS 😔.

It's hard to put into a few words the size of personality that Tiger was as a cat, so I won't try, but when you lose one like him it leaves a mighty big hole.

RIP Mr Tiger, you were a hell of a cat and a tough cookie right to the last.

Oh no! Was just about to suggest a product called Webbox but ... so sorry, DabDab.

Ginger toms are the best. I'm glad he made it back to you though, so you weren't always wondering.

Sleep tight, Mr Tiger 😔 x
