Help!! Any advice will be gladly received!
My gorgeous ten year old event gelding has just sadly been diagnosed as having navicular. The vet has ordered three weeks of box rest till we get to see him again for him to re assess. Seeing as he is a little portly, the vet wants some weight off him too. Egg bars went on yesterday.
We are only on day three and Mont has been caught eating his bedding two days in a row now.
He is on hemp flax which is supposidly treated to stop them eating it (Bliss bedding). If anyone can advise us how we can do things better and how we can stop him bed eating please please say..... just want whats best for him and desperately trying to stop him bed eating so he doesnt get colic too! I know that people recommend spraying jays fluid but I am so worried that if he eats this then he would poison himself too!
We are so lucky that my husband works from home so is camping out in the horsebox and working there for 12 hours a day so we can be at the yard so he/I are able to be with him as much as possible as he is a very 'busy' horse.
His current day consists of,
8am, half scoop bran, handfull of chop with usual suppliments, plenty of water. Put in empty box with rubber matting, with treat ball. Small section of hay.
At some point during the morning he will also have a small wheelbarrow of fresh grass, massage pad and groomed. Clicker training and ten mins with a respiritory lick but watching the molasses overdose ;-)
Lunch, small section of hay.
Afternoon, treat ball, more clicker training, a few more minutes on his respiritory lick and some more fresh grass.
7pm'ish, Back in his usual box (bed eating!), Half scoop of bran, handfull of chop, usual suppliments, haynet with well soaked hay, another small wheelbarrow of fresh grass.
The nets are double netted haylage nets, he has a constant supply of water with an automatic waterer plus water with 'horsequencher'.
It sounds like he eats an awful lot but the grass is gone in about ten minutes and his net only lasts about an hour too if we are lucky. he is a good doo-er too which does not help, we are trying to feed small portions throughout the day but trying to get him to loose weight and keep him occupied is really hard. The yard has no horses in in the day and the stabels are indoors and he is in the corner box with no view outside........ Even though they are on rubber matting we are not allowed to go without bedding (wouldnt like to anyway but even as a last resort to stop him bed eating).
Please help!!!!
