<font color="blue"> My, almost 8 months old, baby has returned home from stud and is itchy. Thankfully not rubbing her mane or tail (yet), but when I remove her rugs morning and evening she goes crazy chewing at herself. Especially at her shoulders, flanks and quarters. A few tiny bald areas have appeared in odd areas (a small patch between her front legs, one around the base of one ear and another on one stifle) and a thorough inspection this morning shows several billion (it looked that many, anyway!) lice eggs in her mane. As she been wormed with Invermectin base wormer a couple of times already I doubt they will be the biting lice variety so does anyone have a safe and effective recommendation for erradicating biting lice from my foal?

I have some Frontline spray (about 20 pumps of it left) and wondered if I could use that, but since most of her itching seems to be around her body area (in addition to the unhatched eggs in her mane) would I have to soak her all over? Doubt the 20 pumps I have left would be enough in that case, or would it?

Try a very good dusting with a louse powder designed for stable and says not for use on horses, such as Lincoln. Remember to wash the rug, clean any tack, remove bedding (if in) and disinfect stable, and treat any other horse that has been in contact. You will need to repeat this at least once, possibly several times over the next month. (Don't worry, the powder is perfectly safe and is what my vet recommends - he's a fab horse vet)

Thanks ever so much for the advice. So I am looking for the non-topical powder? The stuff for use on stable floors, bedding, etc? (Just as well I finding an alternative to the 20 pumps of Frontline I have as I've just checked the bottle and it's Use By date was 05/2007! Oooops.

Re: washing her rugs; what temperature is effective for the job of erradicating lice/nits? Don't mind washing her stable rugs at a fairly high temperature but worried about washing the turnouts above 30 degrees because of their waterproofing guarantee. Would sprinking a thorough dose of the powder inside the turnout rugs work instead of washing them?

My shetland pony came with Lice and it is a nightmare to get rid of them. His thick coat helps the buggers to hide.

I have never found any Louse powders useful, and my vet was no able to recommend anything, there is a Fly Repellant you can buy called Coopers, most Feed merchants will sell it, even in Winter, it kills the lice and eggs, but as soon as it gets warm enough, you have to wash her in a suitable shampoo.

I have clipped parts of my ponies coat which were badly infested with eggs.

I have just had a louse problem (for the 1st time ever) with my 27 year old mare and her 2 year old grand daughter. The old mare was besides her self rubbing &amp; bitting and the vet sold me deosect which you dilute and spray (in a gardening style spray bottle) This seems to have done the job but it does need repeating after 14 days. Not sure what your 8 month old foal would make of a spray though ! (I know mine wouldn't think much of it - luckily they hadn't been in contact with the others) but it does say you can use a sponge instead.

There is a product for cattle caled spot on, i use it on my horses a small drop at the base of the mane and top of the tail and repeat 6 weeks later, it is fab, i also used the, stable powder on their rugs and put them back on the horses it works a treat
