Hi, my mare suffers from a 'low grade pneumonia' (vets words) in the winter, basically she gets phlem really low down in her lungs and because it is so far back she finds it difficult to shift, when working she generally has a couple of good coughs at the begining of a work out. The vet that I called out (a couple of years ago) took bloods looked into her condition and said that the best course of treatment is to continue to ride her to increase the lungs capacity, give her some good burns and let her cough it up. To all intents and purposes she is a fit and healthy horse but just suffers from this problem intermittently, the majority of the time exercise is enough to keep it at bay. She was a lot better last year but she has got it again (to the same level) this year. The first time vet gave me a white powder (unsure of the name) which helps to break the phlem up making it easier for her to expell when she exercises and has a cough. Does anyone know what this is called and if it is available 'over the counter'. Don't get me wrong, if not I will be calling the vet out to visit and prescribe it but i would rather not go down the call out route if I can purchase it myself, sice I know my horse and I know what the problem is and the course of treatment needed to sort it out
