just bought a 6 year old cob mare, 16hh. She is very unfit although not too over weight, just lack of muscle. Started gentle road/hill work with a little trot on inclines.

Noticed she is a little "footy" on turning, and has quite marked indents and a crack in her front hooves. Farrier on the case now.

Question is - should she be on any feed? she is quite lively so would'nt want anything heating, but as she is still growing up and out the way wanted a little advice, out all day and in at night with hay.

My first ever cob since thoroughbreds so advice appreciated!

thank you

I feed my three cobby types a dollop of Allen and page fast fibre and then supplement whatever minerals and vits they need. I had my grass analysed by forge plus but I'm sure a food multi vit supplement would be fine. I like fast fibre as its fast too slack, low sugar and starch and I can increase it or decrease it as their weight dictates.

If you just want to give some vits and minerals etc then I find Bailey's low-cal balancer good. My cob loves this.
If my cob is lacking oomph I add Endurance Mix, but with that comes some unpredictable behaviour occassionally!!!
And if it's winter I pad it out with some chaff.
Steer clear of molasses if you want to avoid behaviour, it does hot my cob up a bit, but not always in a good way!!!

Enjoy! Cobs are fun!!!!:)

My boy has a handful of happy hoof to mix his supplements into and half a scoop of high fibre cubes. His nets are weighed and I use trickle nets as he would eat his own body weight given the chance.

If you don't have to give hard feed then don't but I would recommend a glucosamine supplement for any cobby types just to protect their joints. Mine's six too and gets one religiously.

Welcome to the cob club :)

How do you feed your glucosamine, did you know Poundland sell 30 tablets 500mg for £1!! Think we worked out the TB has 6 a day x

I used to give my chubster baileys lo-cal and alfa a lite. Gave her properly weighed haynets using trickle nets as well. The baileys gave her all the vits etc she needed and the alfalfa tricked her into thinking she was having a proper tea!

Have to say feeds dont affect my cobs the way they did my TB crosses or our current warmblood.

My oldie has always been nuts, whether he was fed fresh air or naked oats and racehorse mix.

Our other cob has always been laid back, again naked oats / red cell / racehorse mix / molasses made no noticable difference when we have tried to give her a bit more "sparkle"

Dont suppose that helps much :D :D

I've got a cob, I don't feed as can't be dealing with buckets, fights over food etc. I just give minerals. I have Forage Plus balancer. I put just under a centremetre of water in a chinese takeaway tub, put in a flat spoon (From my kitchen not a horsey stirring spoon) of porrage oats and microwave for 2.5/3mins. I then add the FP minerals (just under 3/4 tea cup for his weight) and a bit of spearmint or peppermint herbs. He loves eating it, and its easy to sort.

Forage Plus balancer has been compiled using averages from the hay samples they've tested. The winter one once you add in postage is about £50 though so not the cheapest but if it works then that's great. I'm trialing it as previously never fed anything and want to see if notice a difference.

My lad gets a small handful (with 1 hand!) of Dengie Good Doer chaff, 1/8 scoop re-leve for energy (but low starch as he's unshod) and a tiny handful of micronized linseed in each feed. In his PM feed he gets his supps for his feet and pink powder for vits/mins although will soon be changing to Pro Balance + as it's easier!

He is worked 6 days a week though.

My cobs on a tiny handful of happy hoof with a little bit of extra biotin in and in the winter he has dengi or dengi light depending on our grass with half a scoop of A&P fast fibre. He's got good feet and that's enough to keep his weight on.
