Hi, help & suggestions please.

My husband (Wes on the forum) has broken his collar bone badly today at Brands Hatch while indulging in his other hobby of motorbike racing :(

Not sure yet if it will need plating, upper limb orthopaedic surgeon will look at x-rays Monday and decide.

He is ok, just in a lot of pain but whatever the outcome he won't be riding for approx 6 weeks, maybe more. So here is my dilemma, how do I go about exercising his boy whilst he is out of action.

Wes started riding him about 6 months ago as Syd frightened me and I lost all confidence (I almost sold him). They are a wonderful partnership and I need to keep him ticking over until Wes is back riding.

It's not an option for me to ride him as I now have a wonderful schoolmaster and my confidence is returning, but I was thinking that as it's only short term hopefully, if I lunged him twice a week and paid for where we are in livery to ride him once a week would that be ok for just a approx 6 week period?

All suggestions gratefully received Thanks everyone :)

Poor hubby and poor you. Hope he feels better soon. What about using the time teaching them (and learning yourself, if you don't already know), to ride and lead? Useful skill to have...

Sounds fine to me. You could always stick an ad up for short term free riding for experienced person, you might get someone decent who's currently horse hunting

If he gets decent turnout he should be fine hope Wes is not in too much pain and it all goes well with getting the collar bone fixed you could also ride and lead if they are both sensible about it.

I think provided that the horse is fairly fit now if you do as you have suggested it should be fine for when your OH is ready to get back on, bearing in mind that he will be needing to ease back in himself so probably wont want the horse too fit.

I would ride and lead if that is an option. Otherwise your suggestion is fine, if he gets turnout too.

Hope Wes heals quickly xx

My collar bone kept me out the saddle for 6months!! Mind that was because they should have pinned and didn't!

Thanks everyone for the replies and well wishes.

He had a comfy night, i'm making sure to keep the painkiller level topped up:)

It sounds like my plan to keep Syd ticking over will work then, I'll keep you posted :D

Ride and lead, if your OH's horse is halfway sensible. Both horses will enjoy it, and you will too.

(I speak as a cradle leader. My father had been in the army, and from the age of about 8 I was taught to ride one horse and lead three - two on the right and one on the left - as troopers used to do in action). It has stood me in good stead many times over the years. But, if you haven't lead before, do practise first somewhere quiet and away from traffic.

Hope your OH gets well quickly. Poor chap!

If you dont want to ride dont, either turn him out (not husband) or advertise and pay someone to ride the horse a couple of hours twice a week.

You might be lucky to find someone that would like to ride horse for their own enjoyment however!

Hope he mends soon I had the opposite I fell of and got my OH who cannot ride to take mine out for walks and he was soon off cantering around....he thoroughly enjoyed it!

An update on hubby.....

Went to the fracture clinic on 23rd March and they wanted to monitor his healing and to come back yesterday morning for a follow-up x-ray & fracture clinic.

They decided they weren't happy with his progress and the pieces had slipped further out of alignment so they plated it yesterday afternoon (2 weeks after he did it)

He's home today and understandably in pain, but it was the right thing to do.

His boy has been an absolute star, we are getting him ridden by different people at our yard, everyone has been great and helping out, only had to lunge him once so far.

So we are getting there... although it will be a little while before he's back in the saddle :)

Definitely they didn't plate mine and should have, so took 6months to set and still gives me jip. :(
