I know some of you will slate me for this, but I really need some ideas for rehoming Ty. Due to my personal circumstances I really can't keep him but don't want to 'give him away' unless it's to someone who is through the forum!

I realise that in an ideal world it's nice to keep your horses their whole life but I'm in enough pieces about this decision as it is........I'm not just going to dump him on the first person that wants him.

Any ideas gratefully accepted.....PM me if you'd prefer.

Thanks

Could you give him to an equine college?
Pick a decent one and phone to see if they have any space.

Really? that might be an idea - he had a stint in a riding school and was well behaved. Plus, with spavins the extra work can really help.

I think an equine collage will not be the best option for him.
Personally, I know the horse and think he would make someone a fantastic hacking/rc horse. If one of the middle aged, not interested in competing but do the odd lesson and like coffee on a saturday morning and will groom for three hours and ride for an hour people at my yard had him, he would be perfect for them.

I know this is a really tough decision Vics. I am sure someone on here will give him a really good home.

Some recent H&H mags at the back had all about loaning horses out to colleges like Hartpury.

Might be an option

I just spoke to merrist wood who seemed interested and now I'm having second thoughts.

Not sure how he'd deal with different people on his back everyday - surely he deserves an attentive home where he'll be loved?

I think that college life might be too stressful for him from what you have said mightn't it? I am assuming he prefers a quiet life and to bond with one owner which he won't get at a college.

Go and visit to see the set up and the routine if you are considering it.

Boss lives at Hartpury college and he adores his lifestyle there. The students take very good care of him and I've caught them giving him cuddles and kisses (which Boss hates :P )

This is what I'm thinking.

It's easy to be brainwashed into thinking all people on forums are lovely and will feed him polo's for the rest of his years. In reality the majority are genuine, but don't count on it.

Personally, a horse like him I wouldn't sell straight out, he would be a good candidate for a dodgy dealer. It would either go on full loan or be PTS. Given he still has a use in life I would opt for the former. If you found the right home then 6-12 months down the line you could always sell him to loaners for a token amount.

College students are always lovely to loan horses (if not, the students are expelled

) but I don't think this horse sounds suitable...he would be worked for at least 2hrs each day Mon - Friday, and would have to be able to do flatwork, jumping, lunging, longreining, etc.

Ben_and_Jerrys I know what you're saying. My problem is I may not have anywhere to lve in a few weeks so I have to be realistic and make sure I have a roof over my head....that's why I'd rather find him a permanent home.

Agreed about dodgy dealers that's why I have to be very careful - like I said, I'm not just going to give him to any tom, dick or harry.

nothing like that. He just needs to be handled in the stable for the first few weeks and not tied up and left on the yard! Due to his blindess he's udnerstandably a little nervie on a new yard but feels safe in his stable. If he's ridden out with another hrose first couple of times he's fine then out on his own.

i don't want to sell him short, but equally I want to be 100% honest with whoever has him - i owe him that

Equine college is a great place for the right horse. Pampered and stimulated horses settle real well and at least you can guarentee will always be cared for! They often like things that need a little work or are a more challenging ride, as long as not dangerous! Whereabouts are you based? They are really cool about you going to visit as well normally!

Could he live out all year on grass livery and then if money is the problem it would reduce your costs and you could still have your sharers? Would you sharers be interested in taking him on loan perhaps?

Moulton College near me seems to always be looking. This must be a tough decision for you to make. He is a lovely boy. You have to do what is right for you though.

I don't want him shoved in a field. If he couldn't be ridden and was in pain I'd have him PTS but he isn't.

I also don't want him on grass livery due to his blindness - it's not really fair during the winter I don't think.....

his sharers wantd to take him on but they'd be struggling financially and I know exactly what would happen!

In the south you have quite a few choices of colleges. sparsholt in hampshire are looking for horses on loan, writtle college, the open college of equine learning in suffolk, bishop burton in east yorkshire is good, i studied there, also askham bryan, moreton morrell, hartpury, royal agricultural in cirencester, duchy in devon and so many many more I can't even think of!!!!!!! Sorry if I've waffled when you might not even be interested but its a great way to go, and remeber there will always be experienced and knowledgable staff around as well!
