Hi everyone, I'm new ... just joined and have been reading through all your useful tips and advice this week and can't believe how friendly and helpful you are - it's fab!

Thought I'd post because I'm really excited because my new horse and my step-daughters pony arrive on Sunday and need your thoughts/help and ideas!

The little pony (3yo 12.2h Welsh Section B) is fab and I think she will settle in fine because she comes from a really great home with a similar routine, but my horse is a 15yo 15.3hh Cob X who is desperately in need of some TLC!

I wouldn't go so far to say she's been neglected (because she's of a good weight, bright eyed etc) but she is caked in mud (has lived out all year), with overgrown feed, in need of a good god damn groom and lots of love! I can't wait to get her home to me! (I kinda saw her, rode her and instantly fell in love with her - despite her grubby state)!

Can you offer some advice on helping her settle in without making her feel like she's on a different planet?!?

Thanks x

Start her straight in your normal routine, she will soon settle. If she is to be stabled then I would give her Ad lib hay as living out, she will be used to have access to forage 24/7. Good luck, I'm sure they will both be fine.

PiebaldEasters advice is good, particulary about the hay.
It might also be worth checking if she's been used to any other types of feed or had any problems with anything else and when she was last wormed, the old owner should be able to tell you.
Take your time with them both and get to know them before you start introducing really new things. Most importantly = ENJOY!

Good luck!

It's always exciting when a new horse arrives. Just take things slowly & gently & the horse will get to know the routine over time & will be happy with it.

I presume you meant that it has overgrown feet. I would get the farrier in sooner rather than later to have a look & start the trimming process. It may take several trims over a period to get into shape. Regarding worming, it sounds like the horse may not have been wormed for a while so consult with your vet & they will give you guidance. You may need to have the horse vaccinated as well if it is not noted in the passport. Good Luck

hello and welcome to the site
that is all very exciting and it sounds like both of them are going to have a lovely home with you
i agree with piebald easter, just start off doing the routine you intend to stick to as a general rule as it sounds like she doesnt have anything like one anyway
i am sure she will settle quick with all the love, care and attention
good luck x
