I use a clean sponge, damp with warm water, keep rinsing the sponge and dabbing at the sheepskin, leave to dry away from heat and fluff it back up with fingers.
Warm water, a bit of detergent in it after covering the wool in conditioner and dunking it and gently rubbing the grease off works the best. Mine is a bit grim and needs tlc too.
No it keeps it soft and seperated, if it is warm water you shouldnt have a prob. That is how pads should be washed in the washing machine, covered in conditioner!!
I just use plain water, seems to work ok and no worries about shrinking.
Someone needs to event little elasticated washable pouches that slip over the pressure points, instead of fixed sheepskin. Maybe that's a good marketing opportunity, they could come in your XC colours.

Pidge, if it makes you feel any better I brush mine with my velcro cleaner too - after they've had a bit of a wash - as it fluffs the sheepskin up again. I brush all my woolly numnahs with it too
Shock horror at the all the velcro cleaners! A very small amount of fairy and some warm water on a sponge is what all my non machine washable sheepskin gets, then its fluffed up by the hoover!
