My pony now has less than half of the mane she had just before christmas. During the extremely cold weather she was wearing a lycra body suit as an extra layer and this began the rubbing. I took it off as soon as I could and now she just has a standard neck rug on in the stable, but still has to wear her full neck out in the field. She's hunter clipped so needs her full neck but its tearing the hair out at an alarming rate. There are even bald patches beginning to come through! I need to do something now to get it to grow back for the fast approaching show season. Number one on my list is to buy a new rug that wont rub her mane, but anyone know what I can do to stop any more coming out?

If you have another £60 to spare, go get a snuggyhood type thing to put under it.

Contrary to popular belief a full clip can get away with a half-neck rug such as a Wug... or even no neck at all if you dare!!!

If all else fails, wait till the spring and buy some megatek and rub in daily.

I am paranoid about my horse losing his mane with rugs on when I had a full neck I used to sew a bit of satin material on the join - stopped the problem. Now I use the standard rugs with separate neck attachment if really needed and I sew piece of double sided satin material onto the fluffy bit at the front of the rug and he seems to keep his mane. I also use lots of Mane and Tail Conditioner on mane so that the satin bit slides over as opposed to drags the mane out - works for me :o:rolleyes:

I lost a sizeable chunk of mane last winter too.
I've been putting Cowboy Magic detangler on my mares mane and so far it's worked brilliantly.
You don't need to do it daily, just apply generously once or twice a week.

Fully clipped horses always used to wear standard neck rugs before combo's became common place!! They never suffered before combo's! One of my horses cannot wear a neck cover or she looses her mane every winter, I spend all summer trying to get it grown back to the point where it's not just a whisp!! She no longer wears neck covers. She has a 400grm standard neck rug so plenty warm enough!

I shall be watching this post for answers too as my lad lost a patch of his mane last year that grew back thin and patchy through the summer but he is now losing it again :-(

He never recovered full hair growth last year, it grew back thin and patchy so will the megatek you mention help with that or am I better buying camrosa to help with the hair growing back or even cornucresin??

Might have to get him a hair piece for this summer!! :)

keeping the neck cover and mane as clean as possible helps an awful lot. as does mane and tail spray to keep it silky so there is no friction to rub

You can just scrub the inside of the neck cover to get rid of the grime

This!

Also if you can just go for a standard neck. My stable rugs are standard necks and my horse has her neck clipped out and she is fine. The only reason she has a combo TO is so she is dry for when I ride on the evening.

What breed and build is your pony and what make rugs are you using?

I am asking because my pure bred arab mare whose mane reaches the point of her shoulder lives in full neck rugs and has a full mane. Even in summer when she wears her fly rug which goes over her ears she still doesnt have a rubbed mane.

At night she wears a rhino wug plus stable rug with others above and below it ( she is very thin skinned and has a thin winter coat and lives a very cold barn) and during the day while out in her playpen ( cant go in mud at all) wears a heavy weatherbeeta half neck with mark todd combo on top and a snuggy hood head hoos and doesnt get rubbed at all.

She has her mane sprayed regularly and has it brushed every day, same goes for her tail, I have just had to trim 5" off it as it was dragging along the floor, it has been trimmed so it is just off the floor.

Shes connemara, sturdy type and probably a neck hood isnt completely necessary but with winter time comes mucky fields and a full neck is just so much less work. I need to be able to come home from school and get out as soon as I can, before it gets dark so having to scrape off muck beforehand means that there's no time left to ride. Trust me, I tried it with my 15hh and it was a nightmare!
Has anyone else used this Mega-tek stuff? Is it really as good as it's made out to be?
Going tomorrow to buy satin for the inside of the neck, really dont think going without the neck is an option. Plus we bought a horseware full neck rug for my 13hh and she wears it all the time and it hasnt touched her mane. If only I'd have held off and got one of those instead of this Masta piece of junk. Definitely gonna buy another one of those!

Don't believe that it's just down to the make of the rug. I have 3 horses 2 have worn combo's without any mane being pulled or rubbed out, the third looses the bottom half of her mane!! All worn the same rugs, it's just her hair is thinner and breaks easier than the others.

My mare wears a full neck rhino and has managed to keep her mane this year. It can be the grease which literally velcros the mane out!!! I will wipe the inside of the neck cover every other day or so with baby wipes to get rid of the grease and also put detangler on her mane once a week and that did the trick. Having said that the rhino rugs have a smooth nylon neck cover which are easy to wipe clean - I put her in a Masta for one night which has a padded cotton neck cover and it took out a huge chunk. Grrrrr

So in summary

You need a smooth lining to the neck cover - silk ideal
You need to keep grease to a minimum on both neck cover and mane

Unfortunately not much you can do to get the damaged mane back or grow quicker...
Good luck!!
