Like a lot of people I make an extra Christmas donation to charity. It's almost always an animal charity, often a rescue centre or similar. However, this year for the first time in quite a while I'm not working, just a bit of freelance/self-employed gaff going on. And it suddenly occurred to me that on my current budget it's going to be a bit of a struggle.

So! The obvious answer is to try to get sponsored for doing something different this year. My first idea was doing a sponsored walk, but that's rather where my idea stopped, and why I need the help of you lovely people :p

What else could I do that would people might sponsor me for?

If it was a walk, say across the Yorkshire moors/peak district, how far should you walk to be worthy of sponsorship?

I was considering donating the funds to GSD rescue, as I bought Loki this year (a GSD pup) it seems fitting to donate something to the dogs I didn't adopt. Not sure if that makes sense  But at the same time, I feel a little bad that I could help dogs of any breed. What are other peoples' opinions?

Since I was considering GSD rescue, I thought it might be nice if Loki could come along on this walk. But as I'll probably be doing it early December when he still wont be quite 8 months I'm not sure he could go the distance. Which leads me back to.... How far should I walk?!

Sorry this has turned into rather a long post, but if anyone has some ideas I would really appreciate it!

I wouldn't walk too far with an eight month old shep TBH. 90 minutes steady-to-bimbling in one go with a couple of stops.

I had an idea the other day :o that someone should do a sponsored protection routine, I mean, be 'the dog' :o, six-hide search, hold and bark, long attack etc :p

Are you arty? Sell piccies/drawings etc?

I would support GSD Rescue but not before one of my local, smaller rescues who are really struggling. Or Adopt-A-Dog North East :p :D

Aye I wouldn't allow him to do more than an hour really until he's over the year mark, particularly as he's rather big (IMO at least, 27.5k weight and 27" at the shoulder, but it might just be me that finds him huge as I'm a noob :p) If it was a long walk he wouldn't be able to come.

Good point with the smaller rescues but I'm not familiar with that many in this area. Anyone got suggestions for small rescues in the S. Yorkshire type-area?

I'm arty but selling art work is very hit and miss I find, even when it's for a charity people still think of it as a purchase and thus you get all the usual art-selling problems ("Ohhhh that's lovely, do you have one in a yellow hue to match my living room?"... Er no. It's a one-off oil on canvas?!).

Thinking around 10 miles min for a walk at the moment anyways.

Blimey he is a big lad 27" at 8 months, you'd better get him a saddle :D.
10 miles sound a decent distance, definitely sponsor worthy.

No, he's 27" at just-turned-last-week 6 months :( :o

10 miles sounds about right, considering if the walk is early December I'll have the available day light to consider, especially on the moors. So! To find a route!

CC, I'd consider a calendar but I'm pathologically disorganised, so fitting together 12 pictures, all of a theme, would take me far longer than a month and a half sadly!

Sorry Pix, I just read those stats out to my ma and her first word began with 's', ended with 't' and had 'it' in the middle, followed by a big exclamation mark :p
I am sure he will grow into himself and start going outwards, B was something similar, gave me a right fright!

if you find a local centre to donate to why not ask if you can do a sponsored walk of each of their dogs? for example if they have 10 dogs you could walk each one X number of miles (depending on their fitness/ability) & wear a pedometer to measure your distance walked. ok so walking around a field isnt as 'glam' as NY Moors or Peak District, but they'd probably be glad of the walk and you'd be meeting some of the beneficiaries of your donation.

The only 2 rescues i have personal knowledge of in S Yorks are Thornberry near Dinnington and Mayflower near Doncaster

Funny, I get that a lot....

I just repeat to myself 'any day now he'll stop growing and fill out. Any. Day. Now'. It stops me from crying, and giggling hysterically. :)

Mogg- That's actually a good idea, assuming the rescues would be happy with me walking the dogs when they don't particularly know me. I don't normally approach places or put myself forward at all, just send in a cheque (I utterly hate using the phone for a start, which doesn't help. Yes, I know, it's odd) so it would definitely be different for me to get hands-on :D

Have heard of Thornberry I think, I'll take a look thanks :)
