help neglected horse

ive already clicked on as to what teds mum is like. and over my dead body would i let her take this horse (or any for that matter). hence why i never responded to her offer

OMG!!! had no idea about Teds mum...... thank god you're all clued up.
Sorry I repeated her post.

I'm sooooooo glad you've got her to safety the poor thing.
There's another post in Lost / Stolen of a youngster left tied to a gate - good outcome thank god, but again the RSCPA wouldn't do anything....... what is wrong with people???

well done ew 1801 so glad you had the balls to stand up and be counted for the mare that could not do it herself.
Too many people are all talk but you took the action that the horse needed, which is morethan can be said for the welfare charities.
Another person who would like you to keep us updated plaese.

just got back in. i had one hell of a shock when i took her rug off. all her ribs are visible and her hips are protuding. i phoned the rspca back straight away while i was there and they were useless. they said as shes still alert and moving around then it is not an emergency and have asked me to keep an eye on her and phone back when the weather is better. lost my rag a bit then and said so she has to be dying on the floor before you will act and the reply was yes. couldnt believe it. anyway i phoned the owner of the field up who was quite shocked by what i had to say and between us she now has hay and water, but she needs regular feeding. she confirmed that the owner couldnt give a s**t about her and wont pay for hay to be put into the field.
anyway im going to ring round some local sanctuarys tomorrow and see if any of them would take her if i could persuade the owner to sign her over to me.
if not i will buy her as field owner has told me that her rent is up in january and then she is going to ask her to leave, then what will happen to her?

its so upsetting as she is a lovely mare. i had to take my two year old daughter up with me and she was running round and throwing snow about and she never flinched at her and nuzzled her affectionatly
i will be back on the case in the morning

I'll admit that I haven't read all your replies!! But currently the rspca are on emergency only due to the weather conditions, hence saying that if she's active and doesn't need an emergency vet then they can't attend currently, same reaction as you stated you had from the WHW. I'm glad it got sorted though, well done.

EW1801 - What a wonderful, kind and compassionate person you are. Thank you so much for helping this little horse out.

As said previously - prob better to wait to worm her (but it may have been done by now.....).

Keep us posted on the outcome (if you know it).

And shame on the RSPCA (although I know we shouldn't be suprised).

You are just wonderful!

well done. Its nice to know that the old girl can now have a happy life. keep us informed on how she is getting on and I would love to see some before and after pics. Cant believe how unhelpfull the RSPCA have been - very disapointing

Funny old world isn't it, when a horse is in desperate need, one person seeks to help without thinking about herself. Another person sees the opportunity of a free horse.
Thank goodness the decent person found the horse and not the one who would use the horse's misfortune as an opportunity to make dirty money.
Well done EW1801, you have my respect and admiration.

thank you everyone for your kind words. shes now got a full bale of haylage in the field with her, two full baths of water and some company (she was in a field on her own). im still going down to check on her and taking a bucket feed with me. her old owner txt field owner stating she had handed ownership over to her and she is just chasing up her passport (which she is saying she has lost). when she turns up with this then she will get a reciept to state change of owneship. field owner is looking for a home for her at present as she has 6 of her own and isnt really in the position to take another long term. she wants to find a home where she can have one to one attention and prefarbly a stable as shes in a poor condition at the min.
but we will make sure she if ok from now on

There was a piece on my local news last night about guidance from the RSPCA to ensure that horses had adequate shelter, food and water in this weather.

It then proceeded to show two tethered horses, one down and dying - the other a little less better. The RSPCA were in attendance.

I couldn't help but wonder how long they had known about these two animals for.............

It makes you think, doesn't it...

I haven't ever had any dealings with them, but from hearing other peoples experiences they certainly wont be my first point of contact in a welfare situation.

hi everyone.
I have just had a pm from a member on here who is going to investigate why the whw wouldnt come out to astra on friday. so hopefully another horse wont be overlooked in the future

EW we need more people like you in the horse world. Well done you for not turning your back on this horse and getting her help.

That's fabulous news, good to hear such a happy ending, thank you so much for the update and for all you did for the mare.
Hope all HHOers will be as proactive as you if they see a horse in such a situation...
THANKYOU.

Ee1801 - can I jusy say you are AMAZING (along with the field owner too!!). Just imagine if it had been overlooked for another couple of days - the outcome could have been so much worse.
I absolutely take my hat off to you for poking your nose in (and I mean that in the nicest possible way) - so many people just assume that somebody somewhere must be looking out for the horse. I just plea that we are all aware of the horses in our local area, especially those that live out in just a field and that we all cast a rough eye over them to make sure they've got water and hay. Far too easy to look the other way.
So pleased this had the most amazing outcome - what a lucky little mare to have you and the field owner looking out for her.
