So Barney was doing really well in the first few weeks at home, only had one small accident and he was devestated with himself bless him :p
Now the problem is hes needing to poo alot more often during the day and night and its not in any sort of routine  hes always fed at the same times twice a day, has a set routine and is very settled but it would appear that hes just doin his business as and when he needs to, and isnt giving us any kind of warning (used to whine)

A typical day is this ..

4-6am - Barney whines, get up to take him out and hes normally already gone :o so he goes out for a wee

7am - 11am - at my nans currently as im not well, he sleeps through this whole time slot

11am - short walk, may or may not poo

12pm - 3pm - Home for a while, sleeps!

- walk, may or may not poo -

3pm - 5pm - Nans currently ( he loves it over there as its quiet :))

-longest walk, doesnt generally do anything 0

Home and then out at 8pmish, and 10pmish when he doesnt normally do a poo but waits until we both go to bed and then does :o

Sorry if this makes no sense! But we really are totally baffled at his lack of routine in that department :p HELP!

What does he eat, and at what times? Seems like he's going very early in the morning, and then not at all during the day from what you put in the post? Might sound odd but have you timed the average time it takes for him to digest his food and get rid of it out the other end? :p

Is this a change in routine him going to your nans? That could be whats set him off. Other than that, can you ensure he's int he room with you so you can see if he's about to go?

Is he a sensitive dog? Usually Archie will go to the toilet on his morning and evening walk....if he's at my parents for the day he'll go up to 4! We think it's just because he feels unsettled when he's not in his normal home.

There has been a nasty stomach bug going around though - most of the dogs in my area have had it and it took our two over 3 weeks to get over it.....

I wouldnt say hes unsettled at my nans its just part of his daily routine now :)
Weve tried to guess how long for his "movements" and bought his dinner forward hours but nope! Still waits until we go to bed despite having lots of opertunities :(

does he actually whine or ask to go out before he goes?

Was he kennelled before he came to you?

Do you think he just doesn't know he's meant to ask to go out to go to the toilet?

Cliff was the same, just used to pooh as and when he felt like it, always on the same rug though.

He was fed twice a day, he is now only fed at about half five every night and then only has a dental stick and a few biscuits before bed. In the morning he has a few biscuits as breakfast, this stopped him poohing. he goes out for one at about eight then is fine until i take him to the yard at half six.
he sleeps in our room with the door closed, as we'd then hear him get up and start moving around to go. otherwise he was down the stairs doing it before we knew it. Got the hang of it now though.

If we go out he has PJ's on that go over his back legs too so if he was to pooh it would go on him, he has never tried it in them.

Good Luck, Grey's can be difficult to train but he'll get there.

Thats what i mean! He used to ask to go very clearly but he doesnt now :o
Hes fed his bigger meal at 7am and a snack sized meal at around 4/5pm, and sleeps on his sofa in the living room at night with our bedroom doors open (we live in a flar) he can come to us and tell us/we would hear him from our rooms :)

I think that expecting him to tell you that he needs the toilet is a bit of a tall order. Even grown up dogs won't always give clear signs when they need to go. I would encourage him to play and go for walks right after his meals, he is more likely to go to the toilet then, and crate train him overnight which will make it easier for him to hold it in until he has a chance to go outside.

Do you have him out any later then 10pm (ish!)? I'm sure it wont make any difference, but mine wont ever go that early other than a courtesy wee. I'm only talking about another hour, but it seems to make a differnce.
Also, a long wee for mine generally means he doesn't need a poo, any wee of less than 3-4 seconds and I'll give him another 10 minutes or so before we go in again. He gave very few hints when he was toilet training about needing to go out (other than a slightly boggle-eyed stare that also was a request to climb on the sofa) so you had to really pay attention.

This post is very close to my heart, as we currently have a 14week JRT who is going through the training process. It is over 20 years since I dealt with a puppy, so I have forgotten all the gruesome details! He is quite good during the day, gets put out when he wakes up, stops playing, 20 mins or so after food (3 x day, Royal Canin puppy), just the odd accident. He gets no food or water after 8pm (fed at 6pm), and sleeps in his crate. Generally (99%) clean and dry in crate - shouts at about 7/7.30am to go out, then comes back and has breakfast. Sometimes, I think he forgets the difference between inside tiles and outside tiles, but he is only little! My question is, how long before they start to have more "staying power" - the physical ability to recognise the "need" to go, and the need to wait? I know human babies develop this, and it is as much a physical issue as mental. What is the average time to be able to say, "My dog is reliably house trained"? Sorry, said it was a long time since I'd done it!
