I have a 2 year old jrt boy, he's neutered and was house clean for the last 20 months or so, he house trained the first time really easily and quickly, went from p pads in playpen to by back door/dog flap and then just started going outside, perfect we thought. but then my mom got a border terrorist (yes he really is!) who has again house trained perfectly easily, using the same method.

however, i have to look after my mom's dog from time to time, and all seems perfect in the house, they all get on very well and play together nicely, even my 13 year old collie joins in. they all use the dog flap and go in and out all day and night happily. BUT, and a huge but, the JRT has started peeing on my rug and mat by the back door(its a turtle mat to stop the wet paws thank goodness so rubber backed) I dont have carpets just wood flooring so there's nothing to encourage doggie smells. i've now removed the rug in the lounge but the mat has to stay by the dog flap to stop them slipping when going in and out, especially my old collie, bless her.

any one any ideas - PLEASE !!! i'm at my wits end what else i can do, i've gone back to using p pads by the dog flap but cant get him to go outside

Get rid of the mat and get a new one!

Clean the floor under and around with an enzyme cleaner.

Go back to basics.

Take him outside every hour to pee when he goes praise him like crazy and give him extra yummy treats.

As KT suggests, back to basics, I would confine him whislt you are out and revert back to pen/crate to encorage him to hold once a again, then you control his going in and out and he can not urinate when you are out as this is obs the hardest to correct, could u get a different rug at door that is not carper based, sounds odd but they will be more likely to eliminate on carpet material as opposed to rubber for instance, jsut for now till you have got past the basics stage, also try putting the pads on the outside/othersie of flap to encourage him to go through flap pish on pads out there.

thank you both for your replies, i've tried a rubber mat already and he pee'd on it too (little monkey) i'll try a new one tomorrow, perhaps the smell will put him off!

sorry for being dim, whats an enzyme cleaner, where can i get one, and is it safe for wood floors?

i've made a reall fuss of him when he goes outside and make sure he has a p around 11pm and as soon as i get up at around 6am, but he still manages to have pee'd inbetween. i wondered if it was because it was dark outside, its pitch black in my garden at night, i've tried solar powered lights but they have stopped working by the time i go to bed, especially now its dark earlier.

i will try your suggestions above and see what happens, will keep you posted

You should be able to get it at a pet store and some supermarkets have it in the pet aisle.

It a cleaner that neutralizes that actual particles that cause the smell because even with bleach and other cleaners the smell is still there for dogs.

If it has started recently i would get him to the vet. If he suddenly can't hold it at night that sounds like a UTI.

thanks KT, I'll ask at the pet shop in the town, they are really good with finding things if they dont already have it in.

he started peeing when my moms border stayed over the first time, which is why i originally thought it was a territory marking thing, but its persisted. the weird thing is he doesnt do it at my moms house, we visit at least 2-3 times a week so he practically lives there, she dog sits for me if i'm going to be out longer. perhaps having two 'homes' is confusing him?
