Any ideas anyone:

Our five year old, neutered German Shepherd has been leaking a bit of urine. We have seen him do this twice, both times when standing/walking, very small amounts (3-4 drops). Otherwise he urinates as normal, no straining, no smell or changed colour to his urine. If anything he urinates very large amounts. He may have leaked on other occassions but we have 4 dogs so we have two confirmed times for sure.

The vet has checked his urine twice and found nothing abnormal, then recommended Propalin, but as this is for incontinence which seems to me to have completely different symptoms (leaking large amounts, mainly at rest, mainly affecting elderly bitches), we insisted on a blood test (vets were very reluctant

!).

When they tried to take blood they found it very difficult, his blood was extremely thick and the vet ended up having to use a massive needle to get a very small amount. Results are due towards the end of the week (when we will insist on a specialist referral).

The dog is otherwise perfectly fine in himself, active, friendly, alert, etc.

Any ideas what to expect?

That's almost impossible to diagnose wthout urine / blood tests run. Prostate? UTI? Bladder tumour? Wouldn't like to speculate, and not being a vet isn't going to help. But I do see enough dogs every day to say that your vet should be able to get you a diagnosis with tests. If not find another vet.

Hope you get some answers soon!

My rottie dribbles a little bit occasionally. Never in the house and usually after he has had a wee. I must say am not worried just think he hasn't quite fininshed and is in too much of a hurry to stand there any longer!!
Hope your fella is OK.

Thanks both of you.

Urine dip stick came back clear twice, so probably no infection. Prostate seems normal at exam (according to vet) and also the dog is not straining which makes it unlikely to be prostate or kidney stones (as far as I understand, but correct me if I am wrong). He drips at random intervals not right after he has been to the toilet.

I think my hunch is towards some kind of kidney problem which means the water he drinks is not properly processed (if that makes sense) because of the viscous blood.

We will get the results in a few days, I was just wondering if anyone had seen anything similar.

I wouldn't worry overly, he sounds in good form and well in himself, my boy has all sorts of nether region issues because of a complication when he was whelped but he would soon let us know in his condition or character if something was badly wrong (drama queen!)

Well done for spotting it and checking it out, my willy obsession makes me see how little attention other owners pay to 'down there'

Fingers crossed everything is OK, keep us updated.

LOL! Were finding drips of urine on the floor (luckily stone floors so easy to clean!) and with four dogs we were having trouble finding the culprit!! First I saw Dizzy (the German Shepherd) dribbling, we did a urine test and it came out negative so we assumed it was a one off. Then I saw Betty (the German Spitz) literally pissing herself when she was sitting (poor doggie) so we thought we had it sussed! Then Dizzy dribbled again, so it looks like we have two incontinent dogs, sigh!!!

Okay, apologies for being really really well, erm, graphic. But are you sure it's not smegma? One of the hazards of being a dog groomer, smeg on my arm while lifting boy dogs sometimes results in EWWW THAT's NASTY comments....followed by a dash to wash said arms!

It's no fun having an ill pet. It's especially no fun with incontinence. I do hope the test results come up with something so at least you have somewhere to go with it. One of my clients has a dog with the same symptoms you describe, and seems well enough despite them. They are at their wits end trying to come up with something to treat.

Thanks! I will update if the bloods show anything, otherwise off to Liverpool Small Animal Hospital we go! They know us quite well there as one of the other dogs gets seen every three months...sigh!
