Whenever i make a transition into canter (whether from walk or trot) i always lean forwards and i dont know how to stop doing this. It can make canter exercises difficult as whatever i need to do (e.g. make a turn) is often only a few strides a way and i so then have little time to adjust speeds or anything  help??

I always do this too....

I always get told "don't lean forward on the transition" but that just makes it worse!!

sorry, nothing useful to add, just wanted to say that I share your pain!

You know, I'm a bit of a sod for doing this too...

I was thinking about actually reaching behind with one hand to touch my mares bum just before I ask for the canter transition...making sure I'm still looking forwards and not twisting the torso (it doesn't matter if you don't actually touch the horses bum...just the reaching behind action should make it impossible to lean forwards)...

I know this may not look pretty, but it might be a means to an end..

Try looking up at the ceiling/sky/treetops - I have the same problem (and with some horses still do) and this sort of works for me. To me - leaning back is counterintuitive, it would be so much easier if you kind of ducked, leant forward and the horsey shot off :-)

push your legs forward like the old hunting style, wont look pretty but once you get used to having to lean back because your legs are forward you can slowly start not pushing the legs forward and hope that your torso stays back
