I have a lovely navy Charles Owen showing hat, you know - the one with the flesh coloured harness.

Its not been used very often, as I only ever wore it for dressage and showing, and I'm only getting back into competing after buying a new pony....

I wore it today in two show classes, but hubby commented afterward that my forehead was covered in black stuff, so I ivestigated. Inside the hat, the band/ liner is made of a navy towelling material, but behind that there was a thin layer of black foam, and this has totally disintegrated :(

I'm so gutted, does this mean I need a new hat, or maybe if I took it to a good saddlery could they check it for me??? Its never been dropped or fallen off in, and I'm hating the thought of buying a new one (as I also need a new hat for 6yo, as he HAS fallen off recently :( )

Anyone had similar, or got any advice???

Most showing societies and all riding clubs/pony clubs now insist on you having a hat up to the latest standard. So you may have needed to get one anyway. I need a new one so I am going bargain hunting at the Highland Show in a few weeks so I can try them on as not many hats either fit me or suit me.

Its definitely PAS 015, thats whats so infuriating :(

If it was the outdated standard, I would have budgeted/knew I needed a new one sooner rather than later...

How long have you had it? PAS015 has been around for 19 years so a compliant hat can still be quite old! If the padding has disintegrated to that extent you really need to replace it.

If the hat is only a couple of years old and has been stored appropriately the you could try going back to the manufacturer for help. It is possible moth got to the liner? But if it is older than that or has not been stored properly - then you are going to have to replace it anyway.

Its been stored in a padded hat bag at room temperature at all times....

But I have to admit, even though its only been worn maybe a dozen times, its probably about 8 years old.....

My Dublin show hat (no longer in standard :( Gutted as it actually fits me and isn't a stupid shape!) is about 12 years old, plenty used and stored the same as yours looks 100% brand new inside and out.

Grrrrrrr. ...

My jockey skull is about the same age as show hat, and I've not noticed any flakey bits in it.
