Hi there, hoping someone can help!

My rising 3 yr old developed a hematoma on his flank two weeks ago, it was fluid filled very watery feeling - no pain - no heat, wasn't bothered about me poking around prodding it no pain or outside cuts marks etc. spoke to vet said it was very common espcially in young horses as blood vessels are so thin they can bruise easily -

anyway last week lump filled more and has turned into a more gel like feeling lump - called vet again he said very reluctant to scapel etc as infection usually causes more problems in this senario than the hematoma

It is staying same size now gone slightly harder although the more i read some people have them drained some people leave them?? does anyone have any experience of this on their horse and what did you do - please note he is not in any pain - moving freely, i can push and prod it he doesn't care - which is why vet reluctant to do anything but i am concerned - i understand they can take a while to reobsorb?? any experience please welcome!! :(

*christmas pud/chocolate log and 3/4 of a tin of quality street left on offer?

My old horse developed one on her chest after we hit a fence on xc. Her's went hard pretty quickly and was huge. The vet like yours was reluctant to drain or anything and assured me it would go away on its own accord. I didn't beleive him but it did, took about 3 weeks but completely disappeared.

oh god i really hope thats what will happen - did it go quite tight too? i keep worrying it will burst but my vet assures me it won't he just says its on such a muscley part of his body (trying to say he has a fat a** i think lol) that it will take its time - did yours scar at all - as ive read they can scar when they go down?

Yeah hers felt tight it was right on her chest so I was worried about buckling rugs and things on it but she wasn't bothered. Left no mark, the vet told me that if they tried to do soemthing with it it could leave an indent. It was a couple of years ago now and I just remember thinging it will never go but it did, hers was rock solid in the end and I was convinced they would have to surgery remove it. More recently I got one on my arm after being kicked and it was the same, docs didn't do anythng and it took about about 2.5 weeks to go down, mine was sore though.

oh poor you - youve had experience from both sides !! oh well thank you that has put my mind at rest - i keep looking at him thinking hes perfect except for this massive lump - i swear its starting winking and smiling at me lol! it does seem like forever so fingers crossed i ignore it it will shrink if i don't look at it lol - thanks Ossy

Keep cold hosing, my vet always said if they get bigger and are still there a week later then to lance them, but if your vet is against this and it has been more than a week, i would just cold hose it, thats what we do with the racehorses anyway.

The strongest arnica you can get your hands on and plaster it all over the haemotoma. I have some industrial strength stuff which draws out any bruise!

My horse got kicked in the chest bone, vet would not lance as it was over the bone, I used arnica every night and gentle massaged it, but also kept end her moving at first very stiff but then started walking better it helps bring the swelling down, the massaging helps as the fluid needs to be absorbed back into the body

definatly massage !!!
my experience is . . . a haematoma from a kick on his bum ! the leaked blood solidified under the skin so i was advised to put a towel in the hottest water you can stand wring it out and place over the lump then massage the lump i found doing this helped to 'break it up' and it dissapeared. wether if id left it alone it wouldve gone anyway i dont know but it worked for me.

My horse had one a few years back, quite unusually located on his lower leg. Vet said it may take a while to go,wasn't bothering horse at all. Vet gave me some gel stuff to run in,as far as I can remember it took a few weeks to go. The vet said he wouldn't be too hasty at draining it as that could potentially cause more problems than just waiting for it to go on its own.
