Here is one idea for a B only licence towing set up

ROG would you still say the Skoda Octavia 4x4 is your best option when towing the Bateson Derby?

Not sure how I feel about Skoda after all the VW emissions stuff.
We recently got a 15 plate Skoda Octavia Scout 4x4 estate, with a tow limit of 2000kg. Haven't towed with it yet, as I have a Shogun on first call for that, but it is a brilliant car. It is very surefooted and easy to drive, and it has plenty of low down 'grunt' so I'm sure that it would tow my Ifor 510 plus one horse very well. We get mpgs in the high 40s with it during regular driving, though I can't advise on its emissions ....

(I have a B+E licence).

Thanks Tiddlypom. I haven't done my B+E and wasn't intending to as OH and I plan to convert a 3.5t into a horsebox once we've finished renovating our house. That said, I am currently looking at new cars and if it could tow a Bateson it may be a more cost effective option than the 3.5t conversion option, particularly as I've found a company that offers incredibly reasonable long term hire rates on the Bateson Derby with 6 monthly servicing.

FestiveFuzz, what's the name of the company that hires?

Never even occurred to me to do that. Makes sense though as I'm a fair weather lady and so could hire just for the summer months and save myself some money!

It's one stop trailers. I think they only do long term hires (12-24 months) or short term (day/weekend/week) but would be worth asking them if they do shorter long term hires.

If ROG comes back to this thread, he has a very handy link to a car leasing website which lists the towing capacity of most vehicles which I'm sure he'd post up :).

I think that you need an Octavia estate with the manual 2.0 TDI 150PS 4x4 engine spec to get the 2000kg tow limit. Not all Octavias are 4x4, and they start with a 1.2 engine, which would have a much lower towing capability. This is the blurb for our Octavia Scout estate (a sort of beefed up standard Octavia, with raised ride height.) I think production started in 2014.

Thanks Tiddlypom, very helpful.

Not sure I would be able to afford such a new one so back to drawing board! I'm sure there are other cars that suit a B licence set up but I heard great things about the Skoda Octavia.
