We have a lovely old 5.5 ton lorry partitioned for 3 ponies or 3 horses. She has done us proud with the ponies and cobs. Now we have a 16hh IDx I am puzzling over how best to travel him. We have got the partitions across diagonally, bt to give him enough room for his head and neck not to be scrunched up will will never be able to take anyone else out, unles its a Shetland and can squeeze into the remaining triangle of space. Our lorry is not narrow, so how do others manage it with horses. Are we being too generous in our estimation of how much length he needs. We are toying with upgrading in a few years to an equitrek or similar so we can take two facing backwards.

Our lorry is 8' 1" across the width of the inside of the horse area. This is quite enough for all our horses including a 17.2hh to travel straight across without any herring boning. So, maybe if you slant your partition until you have about that length it might be a good staring point for where to position the partitions.

You have a short 17.2!!!!!
We have a 6.5ton and takes 2 horses or 3ponies. The horse area is about 10ft long
to fit in our 17.3 and 15.3 we place the big horses bum right in the corner...then give her the width she needs for her bum. Her partition is then angled till she is straight....... Normally about 4 to 5ft down the horse area from the wall between horse and human area
next horse goes in and partition is put at same angle as large horses partition....... By this point we are normally 2ft away from end of horse area......

Our next lorry will will have a side ramp and long horse area!!!!!!

Interesting, will have to go out and measure what ours actually is. Our fellow is all neck at the moment so that doesn't help. we want to give him the best most comfortable ride possible and make sure travelling is a positive experience, we don't want to give him any excuse to have any more issues!!
