Hi i have just brought a horsebox with side ways travel were the partitions are adjustable.
I am not sure thought if the horse is best side ways on at 90 degree angle or should they face slightly to the front or slightly to the rear. Also what sort of width should i leave in between the partitions should they have quite a bit of space? Any advice apreciated, thanks.

I'd face them to the rear as I think thats the most comfortable for them.

I think Monty Roberts did experiments with horses standing free in a wagon and they chose to stand at a 45 degree angle, facing towards the rear :)

Yep I've heard this too, although it does depend on the horse. Give them a fair bit of room so that they can balance themselves, instead of being pinned in between the partitions.:)

To be honest I havent given this much thought before reading your post. My partitions are adjustable too but my wagon is 8ft wide so my horse stands side on with room to spare. I just presumed that lots of wagons had no choice but to stand on an angle as the wagons arent wide enough for them to stand side on????

Horses are meant to find traveling facing rearward much less stressful so in herringbone I would tend to angle the partitions towards the rear. With regard to partition width, I took my measurement from the Ifor Williams new 511 trailer, can't remember it now but you can check on their website. Its a good place to start and then see how comfy your neds are.
