HHO horse hunting posse

I like the smokey black mare too. Will email about her. But would probably have to go unseen, as there's no way I'm getting down to East Sussex until travel bans go away. Would some willing HHO person who lives in the area be able to look?

Edited: have emailed about the black mare.

Both grovewood and Aztec are long standing breeders, grovewood probably slightly more so than Aztec. I’d have no qualms in buying from Geoff and Margaret unseen.

I hate to say it, but even a local journey to view would not count as an essential outing during the current lockdown.

Buying unseen and getting a pro to transport is probably the only way atm, if you want to obey the lockdown guidelines.

I seem to be on the road towards buying a horse. The two year-old PRE mare seemed just perfect (even if I do have to wait a year to ride her). Have messaged my vet. Sunday evening isn't the best time for arranging vet checks, so that's more likely to get sorted tomorrow. This is so exciting! Hate waiting for the vet, though. You just worry that they will find something horrible.

Fingers crossed!!

Ooooh exciting news! :D

She's Carthusian lines. This is her. They've got the pedigree online, so people who know more about PREs than me can make sense of this. https://www.foresideandalusianstud.com/bozenas-hermosa.html

She's developed a lot since those photos were taken. I think she was going through an awkward stage.
She is lovely looking! I'm guessing you are not wanting to do any specific Spanish shows with her? Sicab etc? Which means the lack of registration isn't a problem. She can be registered as PRE fusion though.

She has some lovely old lines and should make a wonderful horse :)

Could not care less about Spanish shows. Might do some British Dressage ones if motivation to register with BD affliicts me.

If you want to do BD PRE league just check the requirements around pure/partbred. I think you might be ok as she will likely be registered with BAPSH, even if not as a PRE. But def check - someone I know bought what they thought and were told was a Lusitano, except they didnt know what they were looking at, it wasn’t PSL and they are still even now very sore about not being able to do the BD league!

You can do the BD league with none ANCCE registered horses as long as they are BAPSH registered as a fusion/part bred.

Also your friend can still compete if he is registered as Cruzado or Part Bred.

Thanks - I knew the rules for the Spanish side of things were a bit more open than the Portuguese! It’s been a while since I’ve had a PRE and I know they’ve changed the register terminology (I still think I, II etc) so didn’t want to confuse!

Friend’s horse passport is simply a “horse from Portugal” job. Does my head in when a) people don’t do their homework on what isn’t/is a PSL and b) dealers see them coming and sell them something as “Lusitano” and the buyer thinks they are getting PSL when they are simply getting a horse that was born in Portugal.

Here's a photo I took of her. Not a brilliant one. And she is very muddy! She's in a herd with parents, siblings, other broodmares, and she'd been cuddly and interested in me until one of the broodmares wanted fuss and sent her away. OH was meant to be taking photos, but all the younger foals decided they liked him, so he was playing with foals and failed at photography duty.

Ooh lovely, very exciting!

My one (or maybe two but they are connected!) piece of advice (which is totally not asked for so you can ignore!?). Is to check for hypermobility. I had no idea about it and believe it’s behind my horse’s lifetime of lameness issues and mental anxiety issues. My second is with a youngster be flexible with your goals as it may not be their goal in life. I wanted a nice endurance, trec and trick riding horse with a bit of XC. But he turned out to be too anxious to compete (see the hypermobility issue), or at least to compete happily. But because I was flexible in my goals we have still had a wonderful life together. I bought him as an unbacked 3yo 3/4 PRE and he is still a foal in his brain, insanely clever but a quite autistic in ways.

I can’t wait to see how you get on!

Is hypermobility something that's in the breed? Or did your guy just get unlucky?

I may have seen it in one of the Highlands I saw last week. The horse was standing with his foot flat on the ground, but the pastern flexed or kind of bowed out forward. It was odd. I asked the horse to shift his weight a bit and he resumed looking like a normal horse. But I was not inspired with confidence.

I *think* I’m/he’s just unlucky, so I’d say it whatever breed anyone is looking at. I think it’s more common in fancy movers than more workmanlike ones. If I was looking for a horse now I’d be getting a little slow motion footage of them moving, as I’m not quick enough to spot it otherwise.

Might be worth her talking to the GB Lusitano society they might be able to help her get a Cruzado passport, then she can do the BD and MCI (UK only) classes :).

I wouldn't say hypermobility is especially common in the PRE, it is seen a lot more in the big moving warmbloods. There is a chance, but probably the same chance for any horse.

It can be hard with youngsters because everything feels more 'elastic' while they are growing. Picking the hooves out on my grey when she was young was a much more wobbly affair than it is now, I had to hold her hoof so carefully. She'd stand with her weight more on one side and those fetlocks would sink down. However as an adult everything is tighter and stronger and she is definitely not hypermobile.

So I guess I'm saying that it is hard to tell if a youngster has normal wobbly tendons or abnormal ones unless you can compare a lot of different youngsters.
