I usually do this out of half-pass. As in half-pass across the diagonal, straighten and flying change. But I should do this too. Horse is finally settling a bit in his changes. He's gone through a few, um, phases with his changes, to say the least ?

We're not ready for changes yet but I might have a go at this with counter canter and a simple change to help with straightness. Any thoughts on whether that would be helpful?

You can certainly sub in a simple change instead of a flying change. I think that is no problem. I will sometimes do an exercise with a change, then do the same exercise/pattern again with no change and continue in counter canter. Mostly because mine would anticipate the change and I had to remind him to wait and that it isn't always the same so he needs to listen.

I did this today. We're secure in the half-pass, but this exercise is really better out of a leg-yield. The LY give you the new inside rein from the start, so by the time you give the FC aid you're in a better position than the HP will give you.

Yes, that's a given. The point is that doing it from a half pass is a bit more challenging and doesn't give you the new inside rein from the start and has also been called for in dressage tests in competition before, so worth practicing for some. So it is easier out of leg yield. Is it "better"...that depends on your goal I guess.

My goal with flying changes is just to stay in the saddle at the moment :D
