I found this quite a good one for a warm-up before more complex lateral / straightness exercises. Danny (or maybe me!) finds SI quite easy and we've improved it to be more flowing with some transitions in the pace recently, so it was a nice way to get forwardness and engagement. What it really improved was the 10m circle, which stayed in better balance and straighter.
Most of our work is under floodlights when everyone else has gone home at the moment, and it always seems to be very windy when we school so we're both more tense. TBH I think it's me* rather than Danny! So the lateral exercises are all really helpful to get us both focused and more supple, we did some nice canter work after the various lateral exercises in trot despite gusting wind and flapping plastic haylage bales.
*I did try singing while riding on Tuesday night but it seemed to make Danny more tense - I am a useless singer after all ?
I can join in now horsey is up to schooling work!
We tried this last night and it was a useful one for us - made him listen, got him supple on his weaker rein and most importantly I could put my leg on without tension. He’s had hock injections just under a month ago and we are back to the Old Paddy from two years ago with some additional schooling (thankfully). I’m very happy he’s feeling better but with the increased ‘go’ there is a lot more tension. He needs a bit of a dressage boot camp I think ?
