Hi vis - what do you deem necessary?

On a normal winter day, i will now have a combi pink and yellow vest, combi pink and yellow hat band, yellow exercise sheet and orange martingale. I have told my sharer that the minimum shes allowed out on the road with is vest and martingale. Studies show piebalds are the least hit colour of horse, so i hope that is also counted in the hiviz sector haha

Not the super best pic

I tend to just wear a hi-viz tabard and hat band during the summer. We have a lot of sharp bends with hedges but the driver(if they are blimmin concentrating see my hat band.
During the winter or weather I deem to be more difficult to drive/see in I'll wear hi viz jacket, hat band, gloves, crop and quarter sheet- and would wear leg wrap had I had 4 ... lost one along the way somewhere!

For me, the min I wear is tabbard on me and leg bands on horse. Leg bands, IMO, are quite important as someone else said, as that is the drivers eye level. In winter I also use a high viz exercise sheet on the horse.

Hello,

Long time lurker on the forum and the amount of tips and tricks I've got from you lovely folk is unreal!

However I am concerned I'm not visible enough when out hacking.

I have recently taken up a loan on a happy hacker which suits me to a T as I lost all but a shred of my confidence on previous loans that were definitely not suitable!

Pony is a bright chestnut gelding and I wear an orange workmans jacket and a hat band. However after seeing pictures I'm concerned that I don't have boots/exercise sheet/rein bands.

What do people wear out hacking off road? And how are exercise sheets measured? So sorry for the long post! Thank you to everyone who can offer advice!

So so many riders only wear a tabard, but this from a drivers view is not the first thing you see specially on coming towards you with the tabard obscured by the horses head.

This from a personal point of you when coming in a dark lane and the horse was not visible. The horse is more in the line of the drivers eye-line and therefore I feel this along with it's legs should be made visible, as this is the part a driver will hit if not visible.

Be see be safe

Those who only wear a tabard, what happens if you fall off??? your horse has no hi viz on and running blindly down the road, would you not put vanity aside for making sure your horse is visible??

My wear a tabard and my horse {s} wear hi viz martingale - hi viz boot - and depending on weather hi viz rug and hi viz whip only to keep cars away if the are too close

I wear a hat band and some sort of jacket / top (I have a waistcoat, 2 tabards, a hoody, a cycling jacket and a T-shirt so something for all weathers). I also have hi-viz gloves but they're really warm so I can't wear them in summer as my hands get too sweaty. The horses wear a breastplate as they're quite big so their chests are in drivers' line of sight and leg wraps. They also wear exercise sheets in winter. I have a selection of yellow and pink and choose according to weather conditions and background colours.

I just don't understand why people don't leave other people to take their own choices I would never dream of stopping a rider and saying your position is not good enough for you be riding on the roads you are a passenger please go and learn to ride better before you take to the roads again .
Because doing that would save more injuries .

Why comment because I am amazed how many people do not appreciate the risk on the roads. We had one rider killed in the village recently who just fell off for no know reason.

Totally agree and a lot of riders don't seem to think of this. I always put as much on my horse as on me.

I've just added this to my cob's wardrobe: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Wiz-Viz-Ta...=1479228867&sr=8-2&keywords=hi+viz+horse+tail

Still trying to source a parson's rump. He already has a bonnet and breastplate, and bands for his noseband, reins, and stirrups. Leg wraps will be added once I get him over his irrational horror of wearing them. I have a tabard, hat band, leg and arm bands.

I bought a Parson rump, and found it fitted badly - hung down to far and looked really naff. So I sold it and would not buy another. The idea is good but more close revamping needs to be done to fitting and shape

I thought mine fitted well, but I found it pulled to one side so also sold it :o
.. she can make them to custom size according to the website. Shame I didn't get on with it, I really liked the idea.

Tend to go out in just a waistcoat when I'm on very quiet lanes in full daylight (ponio is fleabitten grey nowadays so fairly visible), but if lighting is remotely dodgy or we're going anywhere busier I get the exercise sheet and leg-gear out.

Also keep meaning to buy a new pair of hi-viz gloves because I've lost my much-beloved pair and I do think they make a difference to the visibility of hand signals.

I ride in a tabard, hat band and leg wraps.

For those of you using pink - beware at low light it is completely not visible. I got stopped many years ago by a very kind motorist who said that despite me wearing hi-viz, the pink just blended in at the start of dusk. I've worn yellow or orange ever since!!

Passed three lots of horses at dusk tonight.

First one was coming towards us and the horse had hi viz ears on and rider had a tabard which we saw easily. The ears were most effective though. Slightly behind her was a pony being led which was hard to see as no hi viz on horse or leader.

Second we approached from behind and rider had tabard on and could see her fine.

Last had a hi viz rug on. This was also effective. Had we been driving the other way I don't think we would have seen her that easily.

Based on this think rug, tabard and ears are worth it. I tend only to have a tabard on but only ever cross a road rather than ride along it. This has made me think though.
