Hi. Bit of background. My dogs problems started about a month ago, with weeing and excessive thirst, fine in herself, so took her to the vet.
Blood and urine sample tests, showed liver enzymes 1% above normal and UTI. Was started on three weeks antibiotics. Loss of appetite, this was resolved by changing to fish and rice. Also pacing, leathargic, disorientation, set in after two weeks. Back to vet, on drip over night. Much improved.
Stopped antibiotics.
A week later symptoms slowly returned, with twitching. Back to vet. Hospilised for two days, asked if eaten anything such as slug pellets, no, only change had been antibiotics. Vet thinks probably liver shunt. But not ruling out all manner of possibilities.
Liver enzymes very high. Discussed options with vet, agreed to bring her home, see how she is for a few days. Pacing and disorientation much the same.
More antibiotics prescribed.
My dog is 12. I do not wish to put her through lots of invasive tests.
Have read up about diet options for the liver.
Anyone have any experience in this field.
Many thanks.

Thanks Paulineh.
I have. There is much advice out there, almost too much, if you know what I mean.
Curious what if anything, anyone has tried.

Scan or xray to see if there's any abnormalities or masses on the liver causing the blood changes.i would be worried about underlying causes in a 12 year old dog.

Liver supplements like sam-e and milk thistle do help.there was a supplement mentioned on here lately that combined both. Il check for a name shortly.

How much these and diet will help depends on what exactly is causing the liver enzymes to be acting up.

If she has a tumour or mass on the liver then other meds may improve her quality of life significantly though diet and supplements will help.Scan or xray is a day procedure and minimally invasive and would help rule out sinister causes.

Hi, your dog sounds similar to mine although not quite the same. He had a 'funny turn' on Easter monday and was disoriented and weak. My vet took bloods and scanned his belly (cost around £250 and was non-invasive) and found a tumour on his liver which he didn't think he could remove completely. My boy is 11 and I didn't want him to spend time recovering from a big surgery when it would be unlikely to help so we're now just waiting. He's been put on Denamarin which does seem to be helping, he's been bright and happy since starting them with just a few days where he's seemed a bit lethargic. Hopefully yours isn't the same thing but the denamarin might be worth a look x

my collie has a fairly knackered liver from years of anti-inflammatory drugs. Her LFT's are pretty bad but have imporved since she went onto milk thistle - it doesn't fix things but is helping and the symptoms she was showing have gone.

Hi. Sorry for not responding before now.

I had put my dog on the liver cleansing diet, supplemented with Zentonil.
She seemed to pick up.
This morning though, she had gone downhill, over night. I took the decision help her on her way.
Sleep tight. Little brown dawg.

Im sorry to read that, as Aru implied she probably had other under lying issues so I think you made the right call even though its heartbreaking, hugs to you. x
