Hilary Devet - Muppet

I'm a biologist, and cannot fathom a single reason why adding small quantities of meat into a herbivores diet would cause it to colic, hence why I am asking. Which bit of the digestive system do you think is going to be affected?

I believe a lot of herbivores actually do eat a little meat in the natural world, if it comes their way? Seem to remember something of that ilk on a David Attenborough documentary. :D

Your horse may like an occasional bite of your hamburger or salmon sandwich and can eat it without harm. But since we don’t know the long term effects on most horses, a diet high in meat would be inadvisable (along with expensive).

That really doesn't help

and no I don't grass is much, much cheaper!

Your link says:

I've no idea if that site is of any value, but the above confirms what everyone's saying. High in meat diet could be risky, the odd nibble probably does no harm.

Also from a site that suggests we shouldn't be feeding haylage either :D, and suggests botulism is a bacteria.. no it is caused by a bacteria, clostridium botulinum, botulism doesn't grow

*closes window
*eats chocolate

As others have suggested I dont think theres much chance she was serious about this!! Hilary Devet is such a busy woman i doubt she has time to see her horses daily let alone make sausage sandwiches! I admit to sharing my sausage roll when out hunting, I think due to the size of animals youd have to feed quite a quantity to do harm.

In fairness, most sausages are mostly breadcrumbs and gristle not actual meat ;)

We used to feed our ponies all sorts of things. One pony was utterly obsessed with hobnob bars- the ones with the thick coating of chocolate all over them. She would have probably killed someone to get to one of those bars. I used to feed my pony ham sandwiches at camp, and icecreams at comps. Our dog has on more than one occasion broken into bedrooms to get to chocolate (she ate 2 monster sized bars on Galaxy in one sitting- taken from under the mattress in their hiding place from her) and the only ill effect has been impressive sugar highs.

Lol, dear me can you imagine how much it would cost to feed them if they did need a meat diet!

My boy likes nothing more than a coffee and a roll and sausage when we go to a show. He's not dead yet. He ate half a bag of unsoaked sugar beet one night and that didn't kill him so I don't think he'll suffer much from a bit of square slice. It's probably only about 0.000000000003% meat anyway!

As a baby my lad lived in a field right next to a major footpath, complete with picnic bench right beside it. I dread to THINK what must have been in some of the sandwiches he was given or a regular basis, and lord only knows what else he scoffed.

The only legacy is that he has a serious tendency to mug elderly people - as he KNOWS they will have cough sweets or mints. It is pretty embarrassing getting him through the village tbh, as the mugger cob is getting well known, and people stock up for him. Not meat I may add.. :o

My filly likes tea...one sugar. She shared my farriers last time he was here. She is very tidy and doesn't dribble in it or anything :D

My big lad is quite partial to ham and tomato sandwiches. We shared some after a fun ride in summer. I wouldn't make a habit of feeding them to him but he rather enjoyed them and they didn't finish him off :)

Even if the sausages are 50% meat, which is unlikely, in terms of the weight of usual food the horse probably eats in a day I bet its way under 1% weight wise of its total intake. We eat little meat, however in the past mine has eaten it. And given daughters habit of sharing everything with her pony if we did eat meat often they'd get it too. Her pony loves hot chocolate, tea & coffee. When we go to McDonald's on a hack we all have our own mcflurry. Neither dead yet.

Don't feel boring. If you're feeding horse feed and treats then your horse is probably getting a daily dose of animal matter in some form or another.

Yes thats probably true unfortunately. Having owned an ex-hunter who was prone to the odd attack of colic I am pretty cautious about what goes into my horses' mouths.

so as I asked would any of you feed your horse a sausage sandwich everday??
and she wasn't joking.....

If you would like to buy my horses a sausage sandwich every day, I will happily feed them to them...

Really, just because they do not eat meat (because that is their ecological niche which they have evolved to fill) does not mean that they cannot eat it, or that it will be of detriment to them. I used to give my old lad a mars bar whenever he had a clear round at a particular competition venue. I also regularly share meat based foodstuffs with whichever one I am with at the time
