I have a lovely Ifor Willams 511 that is just over a year old. It has not been used much so is still in perfect condition. Now Millie has gone out on loan it will be used even less as Charlie is a nightmare to travel so I tend to avoid it at all costs!

The trailer is sat doing nothing and part of me thinks I should probably sell it, I can't tow it myself as I haven't done a towing test so I have to always rely on my very busy parents to take me anywhere.

I am however reluctant to sell it though as A. I LOVE it and B. the two remaining beasties are at a yard 20 miles away during the summer but have to be brought home for the winter, none of my friends have trailers so I think I need to have one that I can use in an emergency an for carting them back and forwards between yard and home!

The trailer is insured to be towed by anyone so I have been thinking that maybe I should hire it out, either short term (for days/weeks at a time) or long term but I'm not sure how I would stand legally doing this.

Is it possible to do? How would I go about doing it? and if I can do it how much would you expect to pay? Any thoughts, help, ideas would be much appreciated!

Sorry for rambling on, cookies for anyone who can help :D

I wish i could hire a trailer! there is no where around here that does it. It wuold be wonderful if you could, im sure youd make a pretty penny.

What you would have to do tho is work out what type of insurance you would need for it. Im sure somebody else will know :o

its very unlikely that the insurance will cover commercial hiring out. I would say its a minefield! I would keep. If you do sell it you could have the numbers of several hire places handy for emergencies, they do exist. If you sell it to a friend you could agree that you can ring up in emergency or for these couple of set things and use it then, maybe lower the price in return.

NTTA do a policy, which enables you to hire out your box. We have our trailer insured with them and they seem really good so far!. :d

Before I bought mine, I rang up equi-trek, as they used to advertise that they hired trailers, but when I rang to see if I could hire one for a show. They told me that they no longer do it, as the regular damage sustained to their hire vehicles and trailers made it impossible for them to continue their hire service. I think you would have to take into account the high damage risk.

You'd have to take out a different / comercial insurance policy, but you would cost that into the hire price. It would be interesting to ring up the insurers and ask what their costs would be.

You'd need to do safety checks before you let it out each time, otherwise someone might try to put the blame on you if something happened. You would need your insurance policy to cover you for this possibility as well.

I'm sure you'd get lots of interest in it though!

Do you hire your box out then Baileyhoss? Is it worth doing or is it more hassle then it's worth?

Thanks for all your replies, I'd obviously have to look into it in more details and find out if it's possible to get the correct insurance etc.

No sorry, I should have said. Mine is a private use policy, but what I meant was that NTTA seem good to deal with so far & i'v only heard good reports.

your only outgoings would be, the cost of the insurance. More regular servicing and a sinking fund for upgrages/minor repair.

Check the manufacturers guidance regarding the recommendations for servicing/work at what mileage intervals, you'll need to keep the trailer in tip top condition & have the paperwork to proove it. You'll also need to have some sort of checklist that hirers sign off to say that they checked the trailer before they took it and you check it on return.

I think I would do it. Sounds like a neat little business at minimal outlay if you already have the trailer.
